Be loyal to head coach. Be on board. Give ideas to head coach – don’t pout if coach doesn’t use your suggestion. Be another set of eyes for head coach. Watch what you say to parents – parents like to talk to assistant coaches! Use style of play that is best for varsity. Don’t get caught up in winning. Prepare players for next level. Help kids grow up.

Coaches want to win; players and parents – playing time is more important Lowest pay per hour in the community, most criticized person in your school Statistics show that 50% who start coaching basketball will not be coaching in 5 years 2 kinds of coaches: Those that have been fired; those that will be.

What level do you want to coach at? Bigger is not always better. Look for a job each year. Interview as often as you can. Pick up hours in a minor field (Math, Science, Special Education, etc.) Be the hardest worker in your school.

Good coaches should be good teachers. Loyalty on your staff. Cutting players – hardest part of your job, especially at larger schools. Get your kids to play hard and complete. Make every practice competitive.

Defense Wins Championships – not ability. Support other coaches in your school. All activities. Work with your middles school and traveling teams. Conduct clinics for coaches and players of traveling teams. Do your players show improvement from the beginning of the season to the end of the season? Year to year? What is your definition of success?
