Molly – a newly popular club drug

“Molly” may refer to 2 different drugs  1. MMDA, the main constituent of Ecstasy  2. TFMPP, a non-controlled synthetic drug with properties similar to Ecstasy, often mixed with other drugs

TFMPP  1-(3-Trifluoromethylphenyl) piperazine  AKA Legal E, Legal X or A2  An off white powder sold in gelatin capsules, often mixed with other drugs, esp. BZP (benzylpiperazine)  Popular among HS and College students attending Rave Parties  Escalating abuse since 2004 when no longer controlled under CSA

TFMPP Pharmacology  Serotonin releasing agent (like MMDA)  Mild and mellow high  Mild halluinogen  Anti-aggressive  Locomotor inhibition  Hyperthermia  Repiratory depression

However TFMPP seldom sold alone!  Usually mixed with BZP (benzylpiperazine) for its norepinephrine and dopinergic effects.  TFMPP + BZP combo has norepi +dopinergic + serotonin like effects, similar to MMDA  Marketed as a legal Ecstasy  However BZP is controlled under CSA

TFMPP + BZP Side Effects  Tachycardia, hypertension  Insomnia, anxiety  Nausea and vomiting  Headaches, myalgia, hangover  Palpitations and agitation  Seizures (including status)  Rhabdomyolysis, renal failure

Psychosis  Uncommon  More related to BZP than TFMPP  Amphetamine psychosis manifested by hallucinations, delusions and paranoia  Symptoms usually disappear after a few weeks.

Treatment  Supportive  Benzodiazepines  Treat seizures unresponsive to benzodiazepines with phenobarbital
