A PRESENTATION BY SAMAY MITTAL SCHOOL UNIFORM – SHOULD IT BE ABOLISHED?
2
Introduction The abolishment of school uniform is a topic which has been debated for many years. Now is the time to decide. 85% of parents of pupils rolled into the Yazoo County School System, USA, were against school uniform 7000 people have signed the go-petition petitions to abolish school uniform 55% of teachers in a US school have voted against abolishing school uniform because they argue that it encourages discipline and equality
3
For Abolishing School Uniform The expense of school uniform is simply too large for some parents Uniform does not allow a child to express their personality and uniform can be uncomfortable for some children Parents find it difficult to maintain school uniform for regular use It has not been proven that school uniform upholds respect and discipline
4
Against Abolishing School Uniform Uniform is cheaper for parents in the long term because they do not have to regularly buy new clothes If certain children cannot afford branded or designer clothes, they may be targeted by the ones who can Uniform makes the child look ‘smart’ and civilised Uniform gives the child a sense of identity and belonging and makes the child feel safe Teachers will be able to concentrate on teaching rather than evaluating the clothes worn by children
5
Sources The sources which I used to create my wiki were the Internet and surveys The reason I was not able to use a larger variety of sources is because books and newspapers written on my topic are very difficult to find Advantages of obtaining information from the internet and surveys are that it takes moments to find information and there is a great variety of it and surveys give a wide range of opinions from the public The disadvantages are that you cannot be sure how reliable and accurate the information on the internet is and that people may be biased in surveys
6
Survey Summary A survey executed on 15 members of a Year 8 class showed that 11 people wanted school uniform to be abolished 3 members stated that they are unable to afford uniform with ease and 14 answered that their parents find it a nuisance to regularly maintain uniform All of the children said that they do not feel a sense of safety when wearing school uniform, a common argument amongst people who are against abolishing uniform
7
My Own Opinion I believe that school uniform should not be abolished because although I enjoy wearing my own clothes to school, the excitement of this will soon degrade and the arguments for not abolishing school uniform are far greater and there are many more of them.
8
Conclusion Although uniform may seem expensive in the short term it is really financially beneficial over the long run. Tough sanctions for wealthier students who bully the less fortunate ones for not wearing designer wear will cease the problem of bullying because of uniform. Parents would also have to maintain non uniform clothes for regular use as well, and can stop the problem of losing uniform unexpectedly by simply buying enough spare pieces.
