What’s New HP is introducing new Dual Port SAS hard disk drives Initially targeted for external storage applications Supported SFF and 3.5” SAS capacities – −10K SFF; 72/146GB (36GB not supported) −15K SFF; 36/72GB −15K 3.5”; 72/146/300GB (36GB not supported) Announcement – Packard launch – 5 th Sep 07

Features Dual Port (DP) SAS drives are 100% backwards compatible with Single Port servers and storage enclosures Support for active/active 3Gb/s SAS ports −Provides two simultaneous data paths to HDD −Provides failover capabilities at the drive −Requires dual port enclosure/controller support for active/active or failover capabilities Support for both SFF and 3.5” SAS drives −SFF for maximum density/power and performance −3.5” for maximum enterprise drive capacity

New SKUs 3.5”, 15K SAS −Description/Part numbers – 72GB 3G SAS 15K 3.5” DP HDD; 384852-B21 (72GB) 146GB 3G SAS 15K 3.5” DP HDD; 384854-B21 (146GB) 300GB 3G SAS 15K 3.5” DP HDD; 416127-B21 (300GB) SFF, 10K & 15K SAS −Description/Part numbers – 72GB 3G SAS 10K SFF DP HDD; 384842-B21 (72GB 10K) 146GB 3G SAS 10K SFF DP HDD; 418367-B21 (146GB 10K) 36GB 3G SAS 15K SFF DP HDD; 418369-B21 (36GB 15K) 72GB 3G SAS 15K SFF DP HDD; 418371-B21 (72GB 15K)

Server Currently: Single SAS domain server to JBOD Expander Disk drive HBA Disk drive JBOD What matters are faults that block communication to more than one disk drive −HBA, external cable, or expander could fail Single disk drive failures are covered by RAID-1, RAID-5, or RAID-6 Two disk drive failures are covered by RAID-6 −Multiple drive failures might be caught by RAID-1, depending on which disks fail critical SPOF no worse than disk drive failing

JBOD Future with Dual SAS domain : server to JBOD Using dual-ported drives and dual HBAs, provide dual paths from the server Expander Disk drive Expander Server HBA Tolerates HBA failure, external cable failure, and expander failure (could be two PCI cards, or two ports in the same PCI card, depending on level of paranoia)

Controller JBOD Future with Dual SAS domain : server to external RAID In an external RAID controller, each controller must provide access to each drive −Could be active/active or active/standby Expander Disk drive Expander Controller I ICL FC, iSCSI, SAS FC, iSCSI, SAS Server HBA I I I T T

Single-ported drives Single-ported drives (SAS or SATA) break the model −The top HBA, external cable, and expander are single points of failure Expander Server HBA JBOD SAS DP Disk drive SATA Disk drive SAS SP Disk drive
