TURKEY UNTIL 2 ND WORLD WAR TURKEY UNTIL 2 ND WORLD WAR 29 th October 1923 Decleration of Republic When Atatürk established Turkish Republic and became the president of Turkey,he wanted importantly to westernization in social and politic way. Atatürk spent the following years,up until his death,instituting wide-ranging and progressive political,economic,and social reforms.

The country saw a steady process of secular Westernization which included the unification of education;the discontinuation of religious and other titles; the closure of Islamic courts and the replacement of Islamic Canon Law with a secular civil code modeled after Switzerland’s and a penal code modeled after the Italian Penal Code;

Recognition of the equality between the sexes and the granting of full political rights to women on 5 December 1934;the language reform initiated by the newly founded Turkey. LanguageAssociation;replacements of the Ottoman Turkish Alphabet with the new Turkish Alphabet derived from the Latin Alphabet; The dress law(the wearing of a fez was outlawed); The law on family names;and many other reformes.

And also, M.Kemal Atatürk’s foreign policy was aligned with his motto”Peace at home and Peace in the world”a perception of peace linked to his project of civilization and modernization.

So,Turkey didn’t participate the 2 nd World War. But it lived all the effects of the war. Economical measures which were taken during the 2 nd World War caused trouble in the country. Turkey straddled between USA and Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.

1923-1950 Single-Party Regime.In these years some parties were established but they were dissolved.Because there were lots of people who against republic regime. In 1945 the multi-party period of the Republic of Turkey began. Parties and institutions shined out during this period.

Association of Journalist was founded at this time. 1950 Turkey sent soldier to Korean War. 18 th February 1952 became a member of NATO In 1954 by signing European Convention on Human Rights, Turkey took the first step for democratization

Between 1950 and 1960 ; Western Countries’ economic programme was put into practise in Turkey Migration from the country to town began. Especially emigrates from country to town caused population increase in towns. In 1960’s (Turkish Trade Law) Number of companies and holdings increased.

27 th May 1960 Military Coup happened. 9 th July 1961 Counstitution provided social and politic democratization. In 1960’s, Sending workers to Germany started. In 1971 2 nd Military Coup happened. In 1974 Germany stopped getting workers. In 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation affected Turkey negative.

In 24 th January 1980 Economical Stabilization Programme was put into practice. After 1983, Turkey expanded into global market. In 1990’s Economical Troubles began.But, in these years Turkey took new steps about communication and transportation.
