2011-02-03E. Hazen -- HCAL Upgrade Workshop3 Included in scope of this WG Backplane connectivity (port connections) Protocols on common ports (TTC / TTS / DAQ) Crate and MCH specification Guidelines for AMC designers Power module specifications Not included in this WG (may be in others) Implementation of MMC, GbE, controls DAQ interface upgrades TTC interface upgrades uTCA Common Platform WG

2011-02-03E. Hazen -- HCAL Upgrade Workshop4 Action since last meeting AMC13 now supported by Vadatech and NAT IPMI service provided to MCH2 as “13 th AMC” Update channel GbE provided to MCH2 via switch Vadatech VT892 crates ordered at CERN and MN Document on Crate Concepts and Requirements updated... propose to release as v1.0 this week (current v0.9 draft attached to agenda) Detailed design work started on AMC13 at Boston (see my later talk for some details).

2011-02-03E. Hazen -- HCAL Upgrade Workshop5 Action still needed Follow DAQ and TTC upgrade developments Further testing of TTC implementation for AMC13 Discussion about PCIe and eSATA clocking? Discussion about power modules and standards Hardware requirements (if any) for JTAG Further discussion of “synchronous controls” idea (combined DAQ and controls on Fabric A) We are building hardware compatible with both, so this is not an urgent issue

2011-02-03E. Hazen -- HCAL Upgrade Workshop8 DAQ / TTC Upgrade Status FED-DAQ link upgrade plans: two stages 1 – new SLINK cards Affects HCAL wherever we keep VME after 2017 (should be transparent, or require trivial firmware changes) 2 – new link Optical, but speed and protocol not yet defined TTC upgrade: many ideas on the table Passive Optical Networks, Point-to-Point links, synchronous Ethernet... see Jan Troska's talk Existing TTC will continue to be in use through 2020 New FED interface (AMC13) should handle TTC, plus be upgrade-able to a new undefined optical protocol
9
2011-02-03E. Hazen -- HCAL Upgrade Workshop9 DAQ / TTC Upgrade Implications DAQ link... Should switch from SFP to SFP+ interface to give a little more flexibility. No need to go to 10Gb yet as speed is not decided. TTC link... we can accommodate any reasonable 10-675MHz serial input with current hardware. If a PON at i.e. 1.6Gb/s is chosen (one of may options) we would need to modify AMC13 base board design No reason to change the AMC13 design yet

2011-02-03E. Hazen -- HCAL Upgrade Workshop12 TCA Dual-Star Backplane MCH 1 Commercial /Std MCH 2 aka “AMC13”, “CMS-MCH”, “DTC” Custom design for CMS Bi-directional serial (up to 10Gb/sec) point-to-point links from each AMC to MCH (redundant links to each MCH) Fabric A (1 link) Gigabit Ethernet Fabric B (1 link) LVDS private protocol Fabric D-G (4 links) CLK1/2 (1 link) Dedicated MLVDS clock Note: Interconnections can be customized by the backplane manufacturer inexpensively.

2011-02-03E. Hazen -- HCAL Upgrade Workshop13 uTCA Ports Use for CMS
14
2011-02-03E. Hazen -- HCAL Upgrade Workshop14 Fabrics A, B Use Port 0 is GbE sourced from commercial MCH1 Port 1 – Compatible with Xilinx GTP (<= 3.125 Gb/s) DAQ data from AMC to MCH2 May be used also for fixed-latency controls (TTC) May be used also for buffer status (TTS) May be used also for auxiliary data (selective readout) Port 3 – “Low speed” serial LVDS (80-400 Mb/s) Fixed-latency controls (TTC) Buffer status (TTS) Auxiliary data (selective readout)
15
2011-02-03E. Hazen -- HCAL Upgrade Workshop15 Fabrics D and up Use not mandated by this WG Mainly for trigger users Two options for interconnection Star connection to tongue 3, 4 of MCH slots Interconnect passively or with crosspoint switch at MCH Fixed connections on backplane Or, a combination: Ports 4-7 interconnected on backplane Ports 8-12 routed to crosspoint switch on MCH2
