Teenage days ● W hen he was sixteen years old, he ran away from his house. ● H e lived in a park for two weeks... Washington square.

Not like the other artists ! ● Basquiat never went to an art school. He was considered as an autodidact. ● He invented an artistic style: bad painting. Autoditact : It's a person who has learned by himself !

His Inspiration His inspiration Basquiat loved art, sports, popular culture, and music. All those things influenced him and his way of painting.

Jazz ● Basquiat liked to paint while he was listening to jazz. It was another source of inspiration for him. Miles Davis

!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA !! ● During a trip in Venisia, Basquiat fell in love with the music of Maria Callas. ● It was an other source of inspiration for him. ● The ''ha ha ha ha'' that we can see in this painting represent Maria Callas's voice that he was listening to when he painted.

Basquiat and boxers Basquiat admired black boxers like Cassius Clay (Mohamed Ali), Joe Louis and Sugar Ray Robinson Here, the character is a boxer: he has got boxing gloves. He is the winner. His expression is scary, the red color on his body appears to be blood. All brush strokes and the lines bring up the violence and the movement. He loved baseball, especially the famous player Hank Aaron and all the athletes he represented on this painting.

We can notice that a lot of famous sporstmen and musicians were often black. Basquiat was proud of his origins.He will be the first famous black artist in the USA in a country still affected by racism.

Leonardo Da Vinci and Picasso Basquiat followed two great masters of painting: ● Leonardo Da Vinci, especially for his anatomy studies. ● Pablo Picasso, this genius who revolutionized modern art. ● Picasso said, «I spent all my life learning how to draw like a child.» ● This painting is an « artistic quote», Mona Lisa... by Basquiat!

They met in 1978, their first meeting lasted only a few minutes, in a restaurant in Soho. Then five years later, they were really introduced to each other. They will produce sixty paintings together. Keith Haring was an artist born in May 1958, in Reading, Pennsylvania. He was, like Basquiat a hudge idol of the 80s. Keith was really close with Basquiat, and he was more than an inspiration for him. He was one of his best friends.

First exhibition ● Basquiat took part in the ''New York New Wave'' exhibition in 1981 at MoMA. ● He attracted attention because of his paintings looked like the work of a child. ● He moved away from his graffiti and he affirmed his identity as a painter.
