OBJ: Given notes and activity sheet SWBAT define the terms wave, energy and medium as well as explain the difference between a mechanical wave and an electromagnetic wave with 70% accuracy. Day 1 DN: Distribute WES Review Sheets and Sound & Light Textbook ; Bell jar-Vacuum Experiment [video]; Can sound travel in a vacuum? through outer space? ACT: Introduction to wave, energy, medium, mechanical waves (longitudinal) and electromagnetic waves (transverse) [video] HW: Text, read p. 6-10 ; Work on What are Waves? Booklet; Work on Cumulative Review Packet; Interim Exam, Nov 6; WES Exam, Nov 19.

Lesson Notes Wave: disturbance that transfers energy from place to place. Energy: ability to do work Medium: any material (substance) through which a wave travels. Example: Solid – chalkboard Liquid – ocean & whales Gas – air Moon?
3
Mechanical vs. EM Waves Mechanical Waves: waves that require a medium through which to travel example: sound Electromagnetic Waves: Waves that do not require a medium through which to travel; no medium, vacuum; example: light
4
How do waves transfer energy? Medium stays in place but wave energy moves through medium. Example: pebble in a pond, hitting a block of jello
5
Vibration: repeated back and forth or up and down motion; cause of a wave
6
TYPES OF WAVES: Transverse Wave: wave vibrates at right angle to direction of wave motion. (ex: light) crest: top of wave trough: bottom of wave
7
Longitudinal (Compressional) Wave: wave vibrates parallel to direction of wave motion. (ex: sound) compression – coils close together expansion (rarefaction) - coils spread apart How does sound move through the air? Sound moves as a series of expansions and compressions.
