PCRA –An Integrated Energy Solution Provider 1 FORMS OF ENERGY Mechanical Energy Heat Energy Light Energy Chemical Energy Electrical Energy Nuclear Energy
2
PCRA –An Integrated Energy Solution Provider 2 HOW CAN ENERGY BE CLASSFIED ?
3
PCRA –An Integrated Energy Solution Provider 3 CLASSIFICATION OF ENERGY Renewable Energy Non – Renewable Energy
4
PCRA –An Integrated Energy Solution Provider 4 RENEWABLE ENERGY RENEWABLE Energy sources can be replenished in a short period of time. Hydropower (Water) Solar Wind Geothermal Biomass
5
PCRA –An Integrated Energy Solution Provider 5 NON – RENEWABLE ENERGY NON – RENEWABLE Energy sources can NOT be replenished in a short period of time, it requires millions of years for its formation. Coal Crude Oil Natural Gas Nuclear
6
PCRA –An Integrated Energy Solution Provider 6 How do we get them?
7
PCRA –An Integrated Energy Solution Provider 7 COAL MINES
8
PCRA –An Integrated Energy Solution Provider 8 OIL DRILLING RIGS
9
PCRA –An Integrated Energy Solution Provider 9 OIL REFINERY Crude oil drilled from the earth is refined at Refineries. Refineries We get various products like LPG, kerosene, diesel, naphtha, petrol etc. We also get tar from crude oil
10
PCRA –An Integrated Energy Solution Provider 10 ELECTRICITY By burning coal & petroleum products, by nuclear fusion Heat is generated to produce steam. High pressure steam runs Turbine which inturn rotates generator to produce electricity.
11
PCRA –An Integrated Energy Solution Provider 11 USE OF PETROLEUM PRODUCTS Industry Transport Household Agriculture
12
PCRA –An Integrated Energy Solution Provider 12 WHY ENERGY CONSERVATION ?
13
PCRA –An Integrated Energy Solution Provider 13 CONSERVE ENERGY TO SUSTAIN THE AVAILABILITY OF FOSSILE FUELS FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS. TO REDUCE THE CONSUMPTION OF ENERGY FOR A POLLUTION FREE ENVIRONMENT. TO REDUCE THE EMISSION OF GREEN HOUSE GASES (GHGs) TO REDUCE THE POWER CUTS.
14
PCRA –An Integrated Energy Solution Provider 14 ENERGY CONSERVATION Country facing power shortages Peak Shortage – 13% Average Shortage – 8% Additional power required by 2012, 1 lakh MW Approximately 8,00,000 crores investment Higher wastage of energy. Very high energy saving potential. Only 1/4th of the available energy is used and the balance is lost without any effective utilisation.
15
PCRA –An Integrated Energy Solution Provider 15 ENERGY CONSERVATION 1047.7 thousand million barrels of crude oil reserve is still available 60 % of crude oil reserve have been consumed so far In India we spend 100 thousand crores of Rupees to import crude oil It is expected to last for another 45 to 65 years
16
PCRA –An Integrated Energy Solution Provider 16 ENERGY CONSERVATION Produce 1/3 Crude Oil. Balance imported 40% of Forex earnings spent for crude import. Crude price very volatile. We use energy very inefficiently. India faces a peak power shortage of 13 % and energy shortage of 9 %. To meet the existing shortage and also future demand 100000 mw is proposed to be added till 2012, needing an investment of Rs.800000 crores.

PCRA –An Integrated Energy Solution Provider 20 GLOBAL WARMING Increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases (GHGs) Some GHGs will remain in the atmosphere for centuries Increase in average global temperature (~0.6 deg. C in past 140 years, recent report suggests 1.03 deg C Projected: 1.4-5.8 deg. C by end of this Century) Projected: 1.4-5.8 deg. C by end of this Century) Sea level rise (0.1 to 0.2 m in 20 th Century)

23
PCRA –An Integrated Energy Solution Provider 23 WHAT CAN WE DO ?
24
PCRA –An Integrated Energy Solution Provider 24 HOME CONSERVE Plan cooking, light stove after keeping all the ingredients Use Pressure cooker for cooking Saves 20% on Rice 46% on soaked Dal 41.5% on Meat
25
PCRA –An Integrated Energy Solution Provider 25 HOME CONSERVE Surplus water consumes additional fuel Always reduce flame when boiling starts Soak Cereals before cooking 22% is saved for 250gmKabulichana
26
PCRA –An Integrated Energy Solution Provider 26 HOME CONSERVE Use shallow and wide vessels 25cm dia vessels Put lid on heat loss Small burners saves fuel 6-10% less fuel than big burner Clean burner saves fuel
27
PCRA –An Integrated Energy Solution Provider 27 HOME CONSERVE Clean vessels help fuel too Allow frozen food to reach room temp before cooking Plan your meal timings

34
PCRA –An Integrated Energy Solution Provider 34 WE CAN DIRECTLY CONTRIBUTE 1.By switching OFF lights when not required. 2.By using cloth/jute bags instead of plastic bags. 3.Using both side of paper. 4.Using refills instead of buying a new pen. 5.Buying materials in bulk/without packing 6.By growing plants. 7.By not wasting food.
35
PCRA –An Integrated Energy Solution Provider 35 WE CAN DIRECTLY CONTRIBUTTE Turn off tap while cleaning your teeth, shaving or washing your face. You can waste can up to 9 litres a minute by just letting the water pour down the sink. Take a short shower rather than a bath could save you up to 400 litres a week. If you do have baths, just half fill them.
36
PCRA –An Integrated Energy Solution Provider 36 WE CAN DIRECTLY CONTRIBUTTE Use a sponge and bucket of water to clean your car or if you use the hose, ensure you use a shut off nozzle so the water is not constantly running. Fix any dripping tap, you can waste 90 litres a week
37
PCRA –An Integrated Energy Solution Provider 37 Recycle used paper and ensure every bit is recycled. 70% less energy is required to recycle paper compared with making it from raw materials.
38
PCRA –An Integrated Energy Solution Provider 38 Recycling is an excellent way of saving energy and conserving the environment. 1 recycled tin can would save enough energy to power a television for 3 hours. 1 recycled glass bottle would save enough energy to power a computer for 25 minutes.
39
PCRA –An Integrated Energy Solution Provider 39 1 recycled plastic bottle would save enough energy to power a 60-watt light bulb for 3 hours.
