Warm-up For the next 5-10 minutes, listen to the music that is playing. Write. What does the music make you think about? Does it take you to a certain place? Can you see a certain scene? Does it remind you of something in your past? For the next 5-10 minutes, listen to the music that is playing. Write. What does the music make you think about? Does it take you to a certain place? Can you see a certain scene? Does it remind you of something in your past? Write. Write what is on your mind. Write. Write what is on your mind.

After the music  I need a few volunteers to share what they have written.  Now that we have heard from different people’s reactions to the music, I want you to respond to a few things: Which interpretation is correct? Why? Who had the best response of the music? What made his/her response the best? What are some things that music and poetry have in common?

TP-CASTTL We will use this method for most poems we study in class T- Title P- Paraphrase C- Connotation A- Attitude S- Shifts T- Title T- Theme L- Literary Devices

Title Ponder the title before reading the poem The Rose What do you think this poem is going to be about?

Possible responses- Title This poem is going to be about a flower. This poem is going to be about love because roses are something that make me think of love. This poem is going to be about someone that does something wrong. Boys always buy roses for girls when they have been stupid.

Paraphrase Translate the poem into your own terms. Some say love, it is a river that drowns the tender reed. Some say love, it is a razor that leaves your soul to bleed. Some say love, it is a hunger, an endless aching need. I say love, it is a flower, and You its only seed. It's the heart, afraid of breaking, that never learns to dance. It's the dream, afraid of waking, that never takes a chance. It's the one who won't be taken, who cannot seem to give. And the soul, afraid of dyin', that never learns to live. When the night has been too lonely, and the road has been too long, And you think that love is only for the lucky and the strong, Just remember in the winter far beneath the bitter snows, Lies the seed, that with the sun's love, in the spring becomes The Rose. Paraphrase each stanza of this poem

Possible Responses- Paraphrases In stanza 1, some people compare love to painful things like razors, hunger, and drowning, but the speaker sees it as a flower. In stanza 2, different situations are described that cause people to be afraid and not to live. In stanza 3, the speaker is giving hope that although one may be lonely and tired, that love will happen, just like Spring time will happen after a long winter.

Connotation Contemplate the poem for meaning beyond the literal. Contemplate the poem for meaning beyond the literal. What does “The Rose” mean beneath the surface? What does “The Rose” mean beneath the surface?

Possible responses- Connotation Love is a challenging thing. The words that love is compared to are painful things. For some people, love hurts. Negative words like “bleed”, “drowns”, and “Bitter” set up a contrast with the positive words like “flower”, “strong”, and “sun”. This contrast helps to set up the poems comparisons and the poems message about love. Love is a challenging thing. The words that love is compared to are painful things. For some people, love hurts. 10 Attitude Observe both the speaker’s and the poet’s attitude (tone). What is the tone of “The Rose”?

Possible responses- Attitude The speaker has an optimistic view on love. She describes that love may seem painful at times, but people that are scared to live, miss out on life and love.

Shifts Note shifts in speakers and in attitudes Do you notice any shifts in the poem?

Possible responses- Shifts There is a shift between the second and third stanza because it goes from the speaker describing love to the speaker addressing the audience. There is a shift in the third stanza with the mention of the winter…the springtime…in which the optimistic message shines through and the original analogy is brought to closure.

Title Examine the title again on an interpretative level What does the title of the poem mean after having looked analyzing it.

Possible responses- Title The title of the poem symbolizes the hope one feels when he is in love. Roses represent love and the poem has a positive message about love.

Theme Determine what the poet is saying What is the message of the poem?

Possible responses- theme Maintain hope and know that the love that lies dormant within oneself can and will bloom.

Literary Devices Identify the different literary devices and poetic language in the poem. What is the effect of each device? What devices do you see in “The Rose”

Possible responses- literary devices Imagery: The basic image is of the rose embodies the speaker’s view of love The poem uses sound devices alliteration (sun’s, seeds, snow, spring; Love and lucky; bitter and beneath), assonance (Lonely and road; seed, spring, become), end rhyme (reed, bleed, need, seed), and internal rhyme (breaking and waking) to give the poem flow and rhythm. Though precious, lovely, and fragile, love can also be hearty. This idea is set up through the metaphors throughout the poem “it is a river it is a razor, it is a hunger, it is a flower, It's the heart, It's the dream…” The poem uses archetypal seasons, winter and summer, to set her message about love one that anyone can relate to.
