HN Accounting Review Update

Current position HNC/HND Accounting awards validated and launched - April 2010 PDAs aligned with the new Units - September 2010 Revised awards being implemented by a number of centres for Session 2010/2011

Main changes to unit content - HNC Recording Financial Information –Now 4 Outcomes (but can still be assessed together, if required) –Removal of journal in Outcome 1 and control accounts Cost Accounting –Now 5 Outcomes –Coding integrated into Outcome 4 –Removal of process costing –Job costing added

Main changes to unit content - HND Management Accounting for Planning and Control –Removal of flexed budget –(Allow use of formulae for variances) Financial Reporting and Analysis –Removal of accounting models and word processing of report on ratios –Main differences in presentation between UK GAAP and IAS1 added

Assessment Exemplars Available for all HNC Mandatory Units (including 2 exemplars for Accounting: Graded Unit 1) Currently in progress for: –HND 2 nd Year Mandatory Units –Subject Related Optional Units Exemplars for Broadening Optional Units may be available within other frameworks, ie HN Business or Admin & IT

Changes to Statements of Standards and Evidence Requirements ‘70% cut off’ considered inappropriate for competence based qualification and has been removed ‘Error tolerance’ has been allowed for most Outcomes, as appropriate, to ensure assessments are practicable Candidates not meeting evidence requirements will require to remediate or be re-assessed

Assessment conditions For some Outcomes, assessment conditions changed from closed book to open book or open book with access to a layout/formulae only Mostly remain under supervised conditions Recommended assessment time remains as a guideline only

Core skills Many Units give automatic certification of certain Core Skills/Core Skill components Careful selection of Broadening Optional Units can ensure that all 5 Core Skills are automatically certificated at SCQF level 5 or 6 Opportunities for developing Core Skill components are set out in the Support Notes of the Unit specifications

Credit Transfer Full credit transfer is given between the predecessor Unit and the revised Unit for all Mandatory and Subject Related Optional Units
