2 2000 U.S. National Suicides Total of 28,332* –11 th ranking cause of death (homicide ranks 15 th with 16,137 deaths) –1.2 out of every 100 deaths in the U.S. –1 every 18 minutes –Rate = 10.3 suicides per 100,000 Americans Estimated 726,000 attempts** * Preliminary Data Reported by National Vital Statistics Report, 9 Oct 01 ** Estimate by AAS

4 SUICIDE: Cost to the Nation Suicide annually costs the nation ~ 10X the # of Americans lost on 9/11/01. Every day 80 Americans take their own lives and over 1,900 Americans visit Emergency Departments for self-inflicted injury (National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey, total = 706,000). There are now 2X as many deaths due to suicide as to HIV/AIDS. Between 1952 and 1995, the incidence of suicide among adolescents and young adults multiplied ~3X. More teenagers and young adults die from suicide than from cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia and influenza, and chronic lung disease, COMBINED.
