4 Recap │ Community Aesthetic Feature Plans Preparation Manual (PPM), Vol. 1 (REV. 1/1/2015) CH. 9: Landscape and Community Aesthetic Features 9.1 General Community Aesthetic Features (CAF) are enhancements installed in/on the Department’s right-of-way, structures, or facilities for the sole purpose of representing, reflecting, or recognizing nearby community cultural and/or natural values and resources, or to enhance the sense of place through which a highway passes. These features are designed, maintained, and entirely paid for by the local governmental entity. The CAF may be constructed by the local governmental entity or included as part of a Department project. 9.3 Community Aesthetic Features (CAF) CAF shall meet all governing safety, access and maintenance requirements Executed Community Aesthetic Feature Agreement Department can remove/relocate CAF due to lack of maintenance or need of additional R.O.W.

5 Recap │ Community Aesthetic Feature 9.3.1 Categories and Criteria Public Art (Stand Alone or Affixed) Art installation with no display of text, words or alpha numeric characters Local ID Markers (Stand Alone or Affixed) Text allowed (e.g. municipality name, community name) Partial Listing of CAF Criteria: No commercial advertising allowed CAF installations within limited access right-of-way and visible from the interstate mainline require FHWA approval CAFs are not allowed within the median of the interstate One stand alone feature is allowed per mainline interchange approach 25’-0” ht. max. above nearest point of roadway Placement along interstate a min. 50’-0” (100’-0” preferred) from edge of travel lane Maximum letter height is 4’-0”
