Breakout session Ocean colour and Sea Surface Temperature
2
The Need – Coral Triangle Fisheries related aspects: Fishing ground detection but… (SST, ocean colour, currents) Coping with overfishing/sustainability, illegal and unregulated fishing Safety of navigation (currents, etc) Assimilation with models Conservation related Preserving coral ecosystems – development impacts, bleaching Mangrove systems Harmful algal blooms Tourism - Water quality, biodiversity, aesthetics Many of these aspects require high resolution, but potential for blended GEO-LEO products overcoming temporal limitations of LEO sensors Potential to exploit high temporal H8 data to assimilate with models to provide forecasts (algal blooms, stress related to bleaching), diurnal cycling Prototype of product distribution system – delivery of data over larger regional area
3
Existing frameworks Japan – Australia cooperation in collaboration with the countries of the Coral Triangle Key organisations: Coral Triangle initiative (http://www.coraltriangleinitiative.org/)http://www.coraltriangleinitiative.org/) INDESO - Indonesia (http://www.indeso.web.id) - interests in H8 datahttp://www.indeso.web.id) SEAFDEC – Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (http://www.seafdec.org/about/)http://www.seafdec.org/about/) First task is to engage with these bodies to discuss their needs, interest in remote sensing data, potential societal benefits, relevant user groups, collaboration and potential demonstration projects, validation data Identify max of 2 demonstration projects
4
Scope of work – Discussion with key agencies operating in the region to identify: Key themes to address Nature of the potential collaboration Up to two key demonstration products Themes – identified following initial engagements with key organizations Outcome/output Improvements to fish prediction abilities – towards sustainability of the fisheries system Products lead to improved policy and management of water quality and ecosystems – managed for environmental and tourism benefits Demonstrated benefit of H8 data in leading to a significant increase in capability to better manage the systems in the region Demonstrated uptake of the H8 products by local agencies Capacity building?
5
Scope of Work - … Milestone Progress report to APRSAF and CEOS Identification of needs, identified demonstration projects, role of GEO data (Nov?) Compilation of product datasets for general release Product comparison to assess accuracy (cf. other satellite data) Key learnings Cooperative framework Joint Japan-Australian teams working on same products, independently derive products using different algorithms for comparison Australia supplies in situ data for parameterization and validation Need to assess sources of in situ data for the region of interest
6
R&D work Products: SST Chl TSM Attenuation Bleaching product (based on ReefTemp, incorporate water quality data?, more cloud free) Blended GEO-LEO products Assimilation with biogeochemical models Atmospheric correction Acquisition of validation / optical properties / understanding of optical complexities Scientists on local research vessels/supply instrumentation to obtain validation data (e.g. DALEC) – aim to collect wider validation data
7
Framework and administrative issues: Cooperation with the countries of the region (Indonesia, Philippines…, Brunei DS?, Solomon Is, PNG, Malaysia, Borneo?, Timor- Leste) Funding – Need to be identified: Philanthropic World Bank Asian Development Bank UNEP DFAT / JICA USAid – via potential collaborations with NASA, NOAA Connection with existing systems – as part of the initial engagements

Notes
9
Ocean colour/SST Group Projects of interest to end users Interest in Asia in SST – Fishing But potential political issues with respect to fish harvesting – balance between fishing effort and fish stocks Dredging – currently an Australian demonstration project Coral Triangle – possible key area to target (http://www.coraltriangleinitiative.org/)http://www.coraltriangleinitiative.org/) INDESO (http://www.coraltriangleinitiative.org/) - interests in H8 datahttp://www.coraltriangleinitiative.org/) SEAFDEC (http://www.seafdec.org/about/)http://www.seafdec.org/about/) Focus on these to discuss potential demonstration projects
10
Demonstration project – Coral Triangle Prototype of product distribution system – delivery of data over larger regional area Scientists on local research vessels/supply instrumentation to obtain validation data (e.g. DALEC) – aim to collect wider validation data Products from H8 with lower cloud cover issues GEO-LEO blended products – higher resolution products
