Atomic Structure atomic number atomic mass elemental symbol

The elemental symbol provides a short hand version of each element - they are either 1 or 2 letters The atomic number identifies the element. It tells you the number of protons that are in the nucleus and the number of electrons in the neutral atom.

Using your periodic table, identify the elemental symbol of each of the following: FluorineTitanium PhosphorusMercury LeadBoron

The mass number of an element is the number of protons and neutrons combined together. Th e periodic table gives you the number of protons and the atomic mass; how do you figure out the number of neutrons? 1. On your periodic table, locate the atomic mass 2. Round to the nearest whole number 3. Subtract the atomic number (protons) from the mass 4. This gives you the number of neutrons

Using your periodic table, identify the atomic number of each of the following: Atomic ## protons#electrons Ca He K Ar I

Using your periodic table, identify number of neutrons for each of the following elements: Atomic Mass -Atomic ## Neutrons Fr Ca Kr S

The atomic mass is the average weight of all the isotopes of a given element. To calculate the atomic mass do the following: 1. Find the % and mass number of each isotope (usually given or on a chart) 2. Move the decimal over two places to the left. 3. Multiply each mass number by the corresponding decimal 4. Add up all the numbers (this should match the number on the periodic table)

Isotope % abundance DecimalMass Decimal x Mass TOTAL 100%

Atomic Mass Practice: 1. C-12 at98.9% C-13at 1.1% 2&3..989 x 12.0 = 11.868.011 x 13.0 = 0.143 4. 11.868 + 0.143 = 12.011 Check your periodic table, does it match.

Calculate the atomic mass of the following elements: Magnesium: Mg - 24 = 78.989% Mg - 25 = 10.0% Mg - 26 = 11.1% Iron Fe - 54 = 5.8% Fe - 56 = 91.72% Fe - 57 = 2.2% Fe - 58 = 0.28%
