August 22, 2016 READING 3-D TRAINING

Overview All students will need a benchmark assessment beginning September 5 th Students will need several assessments completed within this window. 1. TRC (Text Reading and Comprehension or running record) 2. DIBELS probes All assessments must be done with the ipad Once assessments are done, students will be assigned red, yellow, green or blue for each assessment which will determine the progress monitoring schedule for the year.

Getting Started There are two separate locations to access mclass. One is for assessments and the other is for reviewing data, entering MAZE scores and generating reports. Make sure you have both icons on your home page 1. go to safari, type in the webpage, click the rectangle icon with the arrow that is located to the left of the address bar, then touch “add to home screen” Address needed to assess students: www.mclasshome.comwww.mclasshome.com Address needed for data analysis: www.mclasshome/assessments.com www.mclasshome/assessments.com You can use this address on a laptop or desktop also. Add this icon to your home screen now if you do not already have it.

DORF The Daily Oral Reading Fluency assessment is a DIBELS assessment that tests reading fluency and recall. Students will be given 3 passages that they read out loud for one minute each. After the reading, students will be asked to tell everything they remember about the passage. The tester will record how many words they say and also give a score for quality of response. Student copies of the stories are in the Benchmark coil book. You can use the book or make copies to place in sleeves. Students will read from the story and you will record on your ipad as they read.

DORF As students read, you will touch words that they read incorrectly and record the last word read within the given minute. The ipad will time the students and prompt you for everything you need to say and do. Let’s practice. Partner up. If you have experience, please partner with someone who does not. Get our your coil Benchmark book and turn to the first story for the beginning of the year assessment. Go into your mclass icon on your tablet, log in Choose a demo student from your grade Choose: DIBELS, Benchmark Then choose DORF (picture of page with pointing finger)

DORF Give the coil book to your partner. One partner can read as a student would and the other can record. Read the directions, proceed and say everything Mr. Say says. After the reading is complete, follow the directions on the pad for the retell. You can tap or drag for each word read, then choose a score for quality of response. If the student says nothing for 3 seconds, tell them the word and mark it incorrect You can go to review and choose invalidate so you can use this student and this assessment again. Switch around so everyone gets a chance to practice. On your own before students come, practice all 3 passages so you are prepared. Any questions for DORF?

DAZE/MAZE This is a group assessment that tests student reading comprehension with a cloze exercise. This is one of the DIBELS assessments. Students are given an assessment booklet that has benchmarks for beginning, middle and end of year tests. Once you hand out the student books, there are some practice exercises you will do, then time students for 3 minutes and they will complete as many items as they can in the allotted time. Students read a story that is missing words. When they come to a box, they will circle one of three words that correctly fits into the sentence. They are graded by how many correct and lose points for incorrect answers. Find the DAZE directions booklet and read over directions.

Scoring the DAZE To score the booklets, just count how many words are correct and how many incorrect and record on the cover page. Go to the mclasshome icon on your home screen and log in. Touch the BOY (beginning of year) tab. Touch the words “record maze” at the top to the right of the EOY tab. Enter in the date of assessment, # correct, # incorrect. Be sure to save periodically so you don’t lose your work. You can record with your ipad, but I have found that it is much easier on a laptop. Any questions about the DAZE?

TRC (Text Reading and Comprehension Students will do a running record with the leveled books in your kit. The text will appear on your device and students will have the book. As the students read, you will record their errors on your device. After book reading, you will be prompted to ask comprehension questions and TWO written responses. Test administrators cannot paraphrase or explain questions for either component. You can only say what the device prompts you to say. Some students will only write a few words for the written component, so you can clarify with your whole class before you begin assessments so they understand that they are to answer the questions completely. Teachers cannot read aloud prompts to anyone.

TRC Begin your assessment where the student left off last year. The highest level is U+ on the device. You will need to use the Fountas and Pinnell kit for students who are higher than this. Students who are above grade level will not do the DIBELS assessments. Accuracy levels are the same regardless of level, 89% or lower is frustration, 90-94% is instructional and 95% or higher is independent. They must be proficient in all 3 components to move on to the next level.

Administering the TRC Basically, for each error, tap the word, write in what the student actually said, tap the error/correction type and tap save. For repetitions, tap the arrow sign, tap and drag repeated words, tap save. Repeat as necessary. If the student is reading too quickly and you can’t keep up, ask them to wait until you are caught up. Have a paper and pencil with you to jot things down if you forget how to code something. Remember to sync after each student. Information can take up to 24 hours to show up in the database.

Administering the TRC After the student reads, it take you to a screen where you can choose reading comprehension questions or written comprehension questions. You can do either first, but I prefer to do the oral first because if they are not proficient you do not have to do the written portion. For the oral comprehension, read the questions as prompted and record their answers. Practice doing the oral reading and oral comprehension sections with a partner. Choose benchmark and then choose TRC. Choose a level from your grade level and practice with a partner.

Written Comprehension Assessment After the student reads and answers oral questions proficiently, choose the written component on their screen. The written prompts will be given to you by your Instructional Facilitator. The coil book has been updated. For each story, the student must complete both prompts. Do not read any part of the prompt to any student. Some students who have dictate to scribe on their IEP can dictate their response for the written questions as you scribe. The scoring guide for the written prompts is included, use the rubrics and keep the standard that is being measured in mind as you score the writing. When you are not sure, ask a colleague. Enter the lowest score in your ipad. Students must have a 3 on both prompts to be proficient. The written work will be collected so make sure it has student name and date on it and hand them in to your IF when complete.
