Picture Walk Vocabulary Words Colt – Does anyone know why we say baby colt? When a mother horse gives birth to a baby boy or a male horse, we call it baby colt. So, colt is another word for baby boy or a young male horse. Whinny – Can anyone tell me how you would talk when your baby sister/brother is asleep? I bet you would whisper with your friend or others, not to wake the baby up. So horses are communicating or talking through a variety of sounds like whinnies, neighs and nickers with each other. Therefore, talking and communicating is another word for whinny. Halter – Have you taken your dog out for a walk holding him/her with a leash or a rope around his/her neck? I bet you have done it or you have seen someone doing it. So, halter is another word for a rope, a strap, or a leash.

Predicting Questions: What do you think baby colt will do after having his breakfast? Where do you think baby colt will go after taking his nap?
6
Comprehension Questions: Why were the baby colts hiding and peeking around their mothers? Why did the baby colt take a nap at the pasture? Who remembers what we call another word for a leash?

Writing Journal Activity If a new friend with her mother come to your house, what would you do? Would you hide and peek around your mother or would you say hi and start playing with your new friend? I would ask the child to draw pictures of herself and her mother, and draw pictures of her new friend and her mother. I would tell the child that I would like to see what you do with your new friend. I will ask the child to give a title to her story like meeting a new friend, I will also encourage her to write whatever she would like to write about in her journal. (personal connection)

VA Foundation of Learning Standards Block #2 – Vocabulary I provided opportunities for children through the book “Baby Colt” to engage in conversations and use new vocabularies to express and describe feelings and ideas. Block #3 – Phonological Awareness I exposed children to a wide-variety of experiences to build phonemic awareness. Through the poem, I helped students to identify words that rhyme. Also, I used words from the poem for children to discriminate similarities and differences in sounds.
