HISER-project WP4 – case studies Task 4.3 Subtask 4.3.2 Eric van Roekel (STRUK) General Assembly Orleans 18 and 19 February 2016

WP4 Case Studies | Overview | Workpackage 4 Case Studies Tasks: Task 4.1, Business as usual (BAU) demolition Providing reference data for LCA and LCC assessments in WP5 Task 4.2, Demonstration of the innovative methods and tools for highly selective demolition of complex buildings The goal is to demonstrate the methods and tools from WP2 in at least 5 representative selective demolition projects For each project the following activities will be carried out: Demolition planning (Task 2.4 and Task 2.5) Execution of selective demolition Analysis of the level of effectiveness in quantification of waste materials with BIM-SD Demonstration by supply chain tracking methodology created in task 2.8 Selection in Green public procurement (GPP) Data gathering Exporting data to ACTIVe3D Task 4.3, Case studies

WP4 Case Studies | Overview | Workpackage 4 Case Studies Objectives: To demonstrate solutions from WP2 and WP3 under representative case studies To demonstrate the feasibility and cost effectiveness of the methodological solutions through at least 4 representative selective demolition/refurbishment projects all over Europe To demonstrate the feasibility and cost effectiveness of both the advanced technological solutions for sorting and purification of recovered materials from complex C&DW and new building products containing higher amounts of secondary high-purity materials through 5 representative case studies all over Europe Case studies in: The Netherlands (Strukton) Belgium (VCB) Spain/ Basque Country (IHOBE) Spain/ Madrid (ACC) Finland (VTT) France (LAFAR)

WP4 Case Studies | Overview | Workpackage 4 Case Studies Milestone MS2 Detailed definition of the case studies (STRUK / M17) –  Milestone is moved to month 21 In March 2016 the task leaders of the case studies will receive a format from STRUK for collection the information on all 5 case studies. – Description of the case study – Activities within the case study – Planning of the case study activities

WP4 Case Studies | BAU The Netherlands | Demolition Project Almere The Netherlands For the BAU (Business As Usual) demolition case study we have selected two demolition projects in The Netherlands. The first object is a non-residential building in Almere. The goal of the project is to make it a circular demolition. Together with Leiden University we have defined two demolition waste management scenarios - BP (Best Practice) and BAU (Business As Usual) for the environmental and economic life cycle assessment. A complete material catalog is made by Strukton and 10 focus demolition material streams are selected for the LCA and LCC (life cycle assessment and life cycle costing) analyses. Reference data including mass, transport distance, prices of each material stream are collected for the screening LCA and LCC. When the demolition project will be carried out in April 2016, the real data will be collected on site and be available for Leiden University to carry out the detailed LCA and LCC analyses.

WP4 Case Studies | BAU The Netherlands | Demolition Project Almere The Netherlands Project: Almere municipality intends to build a new building in Almere-Haven, parcel Steiger 113. The existing building has to be demolished, paving and obstacles has to be removed. In the context of durability and upcycling, Almere municipality has the desire to spend extra attention in the preparation and implementation phase. The building was built in 1983 and consists two floors. Half of the building was used as an office, the other half was used as a storage.

WP4 Case Studies | BAU The Netherlands | Demolition Project Almere The Netherlands After demolition, execution is scheduled in May 2016, the Building Material catalog will be updated will real data from the demolition. Together with the client we have formed a building team to reach the highest circular goals for this demolition project. We have made detailed calculation for the BAU (Business As Usual) and scheduled monthly session to reach the BP (Best Practice) scenario. In February 2016 we have finished the BP scenario and are gathering the information for the LCA and the LCC below the first results of the screening.

WP4 Case Studies | BAU The Netherlands | Demolition Project Almere The Netherlands Via a full inventory 76 different materials where detected in the building 45 materials (approx. 60%) will be re-used (Kringloopwinkel Almere – Re-use material store) Best practice treatment for following materials: – Roof felt via Roof2Roof, 100% recycling – Steal beams, re-use in new construction – EoL concrete via C2CA route Price for demolition at start (BAU): € 101.000 Price for circular demolition (BEST PRACTICE): € 77.000 Conclusion; Circular demolition (BP) does not have to be more expensive than traditional demolition (BAU).

Task 4.3.2: Case Studies (The Netherlands) Case study 2 Demonstration technical solutions fostering circular economies of concrete fractions from C&DW. Objective: To demonstrate technological developments for recovery of pure concrete fractions and their ulterior use as raw material in manufacturing of new concrete including sensor based quality control. This case study aims to demonstrate that a full recovery and full application of fines and course materials is possible for recycling concrete.
