1 EWB-USA Hartford Professional Chapter Sabhung, Nepal Water Supply Project Project Background o The Sabhung Village Development Committee (VDC) is part of the Tanahun District Development Committee (DDC) in the Gandaki Zone of Western Nepal, approximately 22 miles (straight line distance) South- Southeast of Pokhara. o The project was submitted to EWB- USA in 2010 by Namlo International/Namlo Nepal (NGO) and adopted by the EWB-USA Hartford Professional Chapter in 2011. o Ward 8 of the Sabhung VDC is comprised of approximately 834 people in 130 households. The current water supply system relies on a spring source collection tank whose water is pumped 300 meters vertically using pumps that are powered by solar arrays. There are two intermediate tanks that also have solar arrays and a pump. The distribution tank is comprised of 6 5000 liter tanks and the expected water distribution is 20,000 liters per day. Partners, Community Involvement, and Sustainability o Namlo International/Namlo Nepal. NGO founded in the US with the following mission: To help people of developing countries help themselves through education and grassroots programs, while providing an opportunity for people in the United States to learn about global issues and experience the joy of helping others. o LaserSun Energy Pvt. Ltd. Nepalese company specializing in solar electricity projects that was awarded the contract by EWB-USA to help design/build the system. o Ward 8 Village Water Committee (WWC). This committee was created to take ownership of the project. There is a member elected and paid by the community called the Village Maintenance Worker (VMW). He is in charge of checking up on the system daily and also taking care of any issues that arise. The committee also charges 150 NR (1.5 USD) per household per month and uses this money to pay the VMW as well as build reserves for maintenance costs. The community was very involved since the beginning and provided everything from food and lodging to unskilled labor through the different implementation phases. EWB-USA HPC has developed a framework for the maintenance and operation that will allow the community to be self sustainable. Figure 1: Project Location. In the 501 Program Application Form they stated the following proposed mission: To provide a source of potable water for the community. At this time it is not known if there is enough water to meet all the water needs (drinking, cooking, cleaning, sanitation, irrigation) as the possible water sources have not been evaluated in detail. o The project sought to design and build a water supply system, as well as provide the proper training for maintaining the system and eventual self-reliance of the community. o With the 2014 implementation trip, the water supply system was installed and is now operational but there are still some challenges with maintenance, sedimentation and erosion control, and water quality. These issues are currently being tackled on the next phase and they pose some challenges. Figure 2: Ward 8 Water Supply System Schematic.
