A resource that provides energy without harming the environment. Can you name some alternative energy resources?

 Wind is moving air caused by the uneven heating of Earth.  Wind energy can be converted into other forms of energy, such as electrical energy.  Wind energy is currently used to move sailboats, grind corn, pump water, and generate electricity.

 PROS o Inexhaustible o The Earth will always have winds o No pollution o Cost efficient  CONS o Changes landscape and beauty of nature o Is not effective in areas with low elevations o Loss of habitat for various organisms

 No pollution  Cannot be used up!

What does “geo” mean? What does “thermal” mean?

 Uses heat from inside the Earth  Hot water or steam from the Earth can be used to produce electricity and heat buildings.

 Is created from the power of moving water  Used to produce other forms of energy  Fast moving water creates more energy than slow moving water  No pollutants released into the atmosphere

 What are the benefits of this alternative energy source?  What are some possible drawbacks of this energy source?

 Biofuels can release heat through burning  Are used to produce heat and electricity  Can be converted to fuel for transportation vehicles  Corn, sugar cane, soy beans, and wood chips are examples of biofuels
