H4 beam line for GIF Adrian Fabich, EN-EA-LE GIF users meeting, 17 th February 2016
2
Overview 17/2/2016 A. Fabich, EN-EA-LE2 Beam optics and beam elements Logging data Magnets, collimators, XTDV TIMBER data access (GUI to logging data) GIF periods during 2015 27 th – 31 st August GIF period 21 st October – 4 th NovemberRD51+GIF

SPS North Area - schematics 17/2/2016 A. Fabich, EN-EA-LE3

Logging database 17/2/2016 A. Fabich, EN-EA-LE6 http://cern.ch/timber http://cern.ch/timber Settings/readings of beam elements XTDV only from 2016 onwards Steps1-2: choose/add beam elements Step 3: query for period of interest (download as ASCII file or graph) 1 1 2 2 3 3
7
Experimental scalers 17/2/2016 A. Fabich, EN-EA-LE7 Count rates from users’ setup EXPT.GIF.001 to EXPT.GIF.004 – you define the registered counter: e.g. large scintillators/coincidence 31/10 4/11 27/1023/10
8
Beam performance changed? 17/2/2016 A. Fabich, EN-EA-LE8 Use CESAR for verification of settings If beam performance changed e.g. EXPT.GIF.001 as reference Check either individual status windows (access, magnets …) Or quick view on NOTIFICATION pane Indicating all elements different from REFERENCE Beam line scintillators: XSCI.022.480, XSCI.022.481, XSCI.022.605 Typical hick-ups are No beam from SPS Access: XTAX closed, bends 2+4+5 OFF Magnet element failed (restart or call CCC) …
9
XTDV mobile dump 17/2/2016 A. Fabich, EN-EA-LE9 XTDV.022.520 separating PPE134 and GIF (PPE154) PPE143 e.g. hosting RD51 Stops all beam but muons Reference setting during GIF periods: IN-BEAM
10
Collimators - default 17/2/2016 A. Fabich, EN-EA-LE10 Coll 01-07 are typically open around center position Coll 08-09 are used for selection Hadron+muon beam: OPEN (a few millimetre or more at center position) Muons only: CLOSED (e.g. Coll 08=+38/+40, Coll 09=-40/-38) Do not close below a slit gap of 2 mm (might get stuck)
11
Collimators - logging 17/2/2016 A. Fabich, EN-EA-LE11 All collimators with constant settings Minor clean-up early in the line for intensity Left or right closing gap is not relevant
12
Dipoles 17/2/2016 A. Fabich, EN-EA-LE12 Goliath Main B3 (access veto) Main B4 (access veto) Main B5 (access veto) Main B6 Main B7 horiz B8 horiz B9 horiz B12
13
Spectrometer magnets in PPE134 17/2/2016 A. Fabich, EN-EA-LE13 Deflect the beam by typically a few mrad Resulting in an offset of up to 0.5 m at GIF So far only horizontal deflection CESAR magnet status http://sba.web.cern.ch/sba/cesar/Cesar_manual.htm
14
Beam focussing 17/2/2016 A. Fabich, EN-EA-LE14 Final focussing
15
Beam schedule 17/2/2016 A. Fabich, EN-EA-LE15 Beam setup during NA setup Be prepared for first performance checks First dedicated GIF period in the first beam weeks.
16
Air conditioning 17/2/2016 A. Fabich, EN-EA-LE16 Industrial order is with Finance Planning meeting still this week Minimizing impact on GIF operation
17
Conclusions 17/2/2016 A. Fabich, EN-EA-LE17 Default beam settings known Beam reference file will be provided. Performance reproducible All beam elements were re-aligned during YETS15/16. Straight-forward instructions for checking beam performance available Especially the spectrometer magnets can deteriorate the beam performance at GIF, e.g. during RD51 runs. Follow-up from meeting discussion: which beamline elements are published on TIM/DIP?
