Substrate Identification Floors
2
Principal Substrates T & G floorboards Flooring grade boards Concrete Screeded concrete Tile Backer Boards Under Floor/Under Tile Heating Anhydrite
3
Minor Substrates Existing ceramic tiles Vinyl tiles Steel Fibre Glass
4
Preparation Floors
5
T & G Floorboards Check strength of floor Check ventilation Stiffen with extra noggins Screwed down every 300mm
6
Overlay Boards WBP 15-18mm 0.5 to 1.5mm gap between 300mm centres Brick bond
7
Concrete Ideal background Allow 6 weeks drying time
8
Sand and Cement Screed Ideal background 1 :3 / 4 cement to sand Allow 3 weeks drying time
9
Wedi Boards Tile Backer Boards No drying time Impervious to water Can over board with 6mm with manufacture screws and washers also put down with thin bed of adhesive
10
Wedi Boards Tile Backer Boards Excellent insulation properties for under tile heating Quick and easy to install Lay brick bond effect
11
Under Tile Heating Substrate must be clean and dust free Preferably use construction boards for insulation Test heating before tiling checking it works and turn off and allow to cool
12
Under Tile Heating Cover cables with weber floor flex levelling compound until the warming elements are covered at least 3mm thick Keep heating off for at least 5 days and then gradually bring the system up to its operating temperature over a few days Video
13
Heated Screeds When screed is fully dry test under floor heating system (normally about 3 weeks) Turn on at 5 degrees a day up to 45 degrees Run at full temperature for 3 days Allow to cool to 15 degrees
14
Heated Screeds Using a de-coupling membrane is highly recommended Once tiled switch heating on after 5 days gradually raising the temperature by 5°C/day
15
Anhydrite Screed Water sensitive Remove weak layer Prime with acrylic primer Video
16
Minor Substrates Preparation
17
Vinyl Tiles Remove any loose tiles. Make sure existing tiles securely fixed Don’t tile onto sheet vinyl Make sure tiles are clean (use sugar soap) Can prime for better adhesion Use Highly Polymer modified adhesive
18
Steel It is not suitable to tile on external steel work If tiling on to internal steel work, you must ensure that the surface is free from grease & rust.
19
Steel The surface must be primed with a suitable rust inhibiting primer. It is not recommended to use large format tiles Use 2 part adhesive or epoxy
20
Fibre Glass Must be rigid Allow new GRP to cure for 4 weeks Surface must be clean, dry and free from grease Lightly abrade the surface and remove dust to improve key Use 2 part Adhesive or weber.set pro lite rapid
