3 Troy The greatest city in the world Ruled by king Priam and queen Hecuba Paris- their son (a prince) who is living as a shepherd because Priam had a dream that he would cause the destruction of Troy

4 The Judgment of Paris Paris must choose who is the “fairest” between Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite Paris is bribed by each one and he chooses Aphrodite Aphrodite says that Paris can choose any woman in the world to be his

5 Paris goes to Sparta Aphrodite leads Paris to Sparta He meets Helen, wife of Menelaus, falls in love and steals her away They return to Troy

6 Menelaus Assembles the Greeks Menelaus calls all of the leaders of the Greek armies together They agree to go to war to return Helen and defeat Troy Helen is known as “The face that launched a thousand ships”

7 Artemis is Angry The north winds blow, so the Greeks can’t sail to Troy Artemis requires a sacrifice from Agamemnon, he must kill his own daughter He does, and the Greeks sail to Troy

8 The Greeks Reach Troy The War begins From the beginning, the Gods get involved; they choose sides The fighting is about even for 9 years And then….

9 A Conflict Arises Between Agamemnon and Achilles Agamemnon must return Chryseis(his girl) so Apollo would stop killing the Greeks He returns Chryseis but takes Achilles’ girl, Briseis Achilles is very angry and refuses to fight for the Greeks

10 Paris fights Menelaus Menelaus wins the fight, but….. Paris is saved by Aphrodite Everyone agrees that Menelaus won the fight

11 The Gods Interfere The armies were going to agree that the war was over, but… Hera and Athena wanted the war to continue, so they tricked Pandarus, a Trojan, to shoot an arrow at Menelaus THE WAR IS ON!!!

13 The fighting is brutal- The Gods are intervening back and forth Zeus was giving Hector power to kill many Greeks Agamemnon says he thinks the Greeks should sail home Nestor tells him to get Achilles back and they could win

14 Achilles refuses to fight They bribe Achilles but he still refuses Many Greeks are being killed Achilles’ best friend, Patroclus, decides to fight in Achilles’ armor with his soldiers-the Myrmidons

15 Patroclus Dies!! Hector kills Patroclus and takes Achilles’ armor Achilles learns of this and will return to the battle Thetis (Achilles’ mom) warns him that if Achilles returns to the battle, he is fated to die.

16 Achilles Returns to the Fight The Greeks push the Trojans back- they are energized by Achilles Achilles kills many Trojans Finally, he meets up with Hector

17 Achilles Kills Hector! He disgraces his body in front of all the Trojans King Priam goes to Achilles and asks for his son’s body Achilles feels sympathy and returns the body The fighting stops for nine days

18 The Greeks trick the Trojans Odysseus creates a plan to trick the Trojans They build a giant horse and put their best soldiers inside The Greeks destroy the city of Troy

19 Paris Kills Achilles Paris shoots Achilles in the heel-his only weakness Some Trojans escape, but Troy is burned to the ground Odysseus’ story continues in “The Odyssey”
