2 Sportsmanship Leicester High School and the MIAA – –Win with class and lose with class – –Respect for self, coaching staff, opponents and game officials – –Players, parent and spectators – –On the field, off the field – –MIAA evaluation process and penalties   Evaluates coaches, players, officials and spectators

3 Chemical Health Rule: MIAA Rule 62 Use of alcohol, drugs, tobacco products and steroids Begins the first day of the earliest fall practice and extends to the final day of the spring season. Social Networking Offenses are cumulative from year to year – –1 st offense – loss of 25 % of season – –2 nd offense – loss of 60% of season – –Example: A student plays only soccer: violates the rule in winter and/or spring of the same academic year: serves the penalty during the fall of the next academic year. 4 Bona Fide Team Rule MIAA Rule 45 Each player is considered a bona fide member of his or her team. The high school team takes priority to any AAU, club or other organized team. Missing a game or practice or leaving early to attend another organized sport will result in a suspension of 25% of the season. Why? Dedication, roster position and overuse injuries

5 Academic Eligibility MIAA Rule 58 To be eligible for a team, a student athlete must remain in good academic standing. Fall eligibility – must have passed six of eight courses taken during the previous academic year Spring Eligibility- Can become eligible 2 nd, 3 rd and 4 th quarter eligibility – must pass three of the four courses You can lose eligibility during your season!

6 Sportsmanship: Taunting MIAA Rule 48 Taunting includes any actions or comments by coaches, players, or spectators which are intended to bait, anger, embarrass, ridicule, or demean others, whether or not the deeds or words are vulgar or racist. Included is conduct that berates, needles, intimidates, or threatens based on race, gender, ethnic origin or background, and conduct that attacks religious beliefs, size, economic status, speech, family, special needs, or personal characteristics. 7 Attendance Policy Student athletes are to be in school for at least ½ day to participate. School absence – no participation Excused absences – determined by building administration.

8 Athletic Fee $75/$100 per student athlete per season $225/$300 family maximum per year Will not receive jersey or play if not paid Reimbursement through health insurance Does not guarantee playing time

9 Playing Time Please review Athletic Agreement Most Influential – Student Athlete Philosophy on playing time is driven by level of competition Not all varsity players will receive equal playing time

10 Athlete Hygiene Athletes Will: Wash hands frequently with soap and water, especial after using any sports facilities. Avoid sharing personal items (e.g., towels, washcloths, razors, clothing, or uniforms) that may have had contact with and infected individual or potentially infectious material. · Report any suspicious skin sore or boil to your healthcare provider and school nurse immediately. Shower with soap immediately after each practice, game, or match if participating in sports involving close personal contact (e.g. cheering, basketball, and football). Spray with disinfectant after each use non-­washable gear (e.g. shoulder pads and helmets). Wipe down grips on weights, weight benches and pads after use.

11 Admission Fees SWCL Admission Pricing   Adult - $5Child - $3   Senior Citizens– Free – –Pertains to   All night contests including JV games   All varsity football games except Thanksgiving No gate at any of these contests is the exception not the rule.

13 Hazing Coaching staff will ensure that student athletes know the definition of hazing. Coaching staff will provide all student athletes with a copy of Commonwealth of Massachusetts: Anti-Hazing Law and review it with them. Coaching staff will ensure that each student athlete is familiar with the law and the penalties for violating it.

14 Concussions Observed Signs and Symptoms Athlete Reported Symptoms Do you suspect a concussion? What should you do? – –Stop Activity – –Seek Medical Attention

15 Return to Play Any athlete that has been removed from play for a suspected concussion must have clearance from a physician and Athletic Director. Students, parents and coaches cannot decide when an athlete can return to play.

17 Booster Club Donates time and money to Leicester High School Athletics. This past year the Booster Club helped differ the cost of many athletic teams and purchased a new announcer’s booth, goal post mounts, and reconditioned the field hockey nets. Please consider joining.
