18/12/01PPD Christmas Lectures 2003 R-GMA Infrastructure and tools for Information on Resources ("MDS replacement") Information from applications Information published from around the world R-GMA makes it all appear as one large Relational Database which can be queried. R-GMA is a UK development (RAL, Brunel, Herriot-Watt, QMUL) and TCD Being evaluated by D0 and CMS for job monitoring. Successfully deployed on the DataGrid Application Testbed Plan to take it forward in LCG/EGEE "Re-engineering" Move to Grid Services

18/12/01PPD Christmas Lectures 2003 Tier One Vs Tier Two Computing Group staff work within the Core Tier 1 support/management team providing a national resource. Tier 1 at RAL will provide 100’s of CPUs 10’s of TB of Disk Storage and PB’s of Tape RAL Tier 1 is also one of two sites providing core infrastructure services for the Worldwide Grid Computing Group in the Dept. are also working on the SouthGrid Regional Tier 2 Tier 2’s will provide resources at about 10-25% of the Tier 1 (CPU and Disk)
7
18/12/01PPD Christmas Lectures 2003 SouthGrid Collaboration of RAL PPD, Oxford, Cambridge, Birmingham and Bristol to provide Tier 2 Services to GridPP Use existing resources and will work with local eScience centres to get more In future will provide both co-ordinated support to users and local system managers

18/12/01PPD Christmas Lectures 2003 Other Activities Data Storage Working with CLRC eScience Centre on the Storage Element Security Heavily involved in the Security Taskforces of EDG and LCG Applications Working with experiments to port their code to the Grid
9
18/12/01PPD Christmas Lectures 2003 What can I do on the Grid Now? Current Resources: EDG: 78 CPUs 2.1 TB Disk Storage LCG: 91 Worker Nodes 13TB Disk Storage Run test jobs. Get the feel for the job submission and management Little data has yet been loaded onto the Grid
10
18/12/01PPD Christmas Lectures 2003 What can I do in 6 months? EDG will have gone, LCG will be expanding There should be significant amounts of CPU and storage available (>5000 kSI2k, 1PB) Aim is for stability not development Experiment Code will be starting to be available for testing on the Grid If you have a computing project the will need large amounts of CPU/Disk you should consider using the Grid.
11
18/12/01PPD Christmas Lectures 2003 What can I do next year and beyond By this time next year there should be very large resources available on the grid Experimental code for user analysis should be being made available
12
18/12/01PPD Christmas Lectures 2003 Conclusion The Department continues to be at the centre of Grid Development in Particle Physics The coming year should mark the transition from development to production for the Particle Physics Grids But unless you want to or have a need for large amounts of computing resources the changes to you as a user will be limited
