Character: There are no people in the the image. There is the head of the statue of liberty on the ground. The broken head represents the order of society that has been ruined and chaos that has emerged. The Statue of Liberty, usually symbolizes freedom or justice of a nation, has broken down leading to corruption. Liberty’s face is half demolished with chunks of it laying around it. This shows how it is hard to recover from the corruption and the head has been sitting there for a while. Color: There are no bright colors in the photo showing a very gloomy and shady environment. A majority of the photo is composed of darker shades of gray, consisting of the almost black, burnt buildings on the left side, the graffiti covered wall, and the rock covered ground around the head. The burnt buildings and ground show a crumbling, unreliable society. The graffiti on the wall shows the lack of order or laws. The only brighter areas in the photo are the face and the light shining from the cloud covered sky. These show a ray of hope in the darkness of this chaos, yet this hope seems unreachable shown by the contrast between the sky and the buildings. Light: There is light shining on the face even when it is surrounded by darkness. This shows how the almost everything has been lost but the statue is still clinging on. The crown, which is a symbol for power and order, but is lost in the shadows. This shows how society is in a state of anarchy and has no important figure to lead them. The buildings are left in the darkness of shadows showing the chaos the people are living in chaos. Angle: The angle is straight towards the face of Liberty. This shows the importance of Liberty as a figure of freedom and order. The bridge and sky, both representing a path out of the chaos, are only partly shown, which represents the difficulty of escaping this situation. Proportion: The head of the statue is larger than its surroundings, which brings the attention to it. This shows the importance of the figure in order to preserve order and prevent chaos. The fence enclosing the head is almost as tall as the head, but not taller. This shows how the hope of escaping the chaos is hard, but with effort can be achieved. Placement: The head of Liberty is placed in the center of the image. It is confined between a graffiti filled wall and a rusted fence showing the law and order restrained by the corruption and depravity. The burnt buildings towering over liberty is a metaphor for how chaos is powering over order. There is a bridge towards the bottom right of the picture. This represents a passage to a more orderly society but is hard to achieve because it is cut off. Setting: The areas around Liberty’s head are very broken down and dark. This shows the dreariness of the area. The entire city is broken down including the buildings. This shows the chaos that is occurring during this time.
