3 #Cloudscape2016 Presentation Overview What Hybrid cloud computing, connectivity and security Who Two guys with an idea and a small handful of partners who chose to tolerate them How Let's try something new...We're going to re-enact the typical process of cloud adoption from pre-sales architecture and high-level designs, through platform selection and low-level design planning all the way to implementation, management, and monitoring. Why Because it's not as easy as it looks and therefore, much more interesting than it sounds from a technology and interoperability perspective.

4 #Cloudscape2016 What We Are NOT Doing We're NOT doing this with 40 slides and a bunch of diagrams supporting individual architectures. We're NOT trying to sell you something or push a specific technology vendor. Really. We are genuinely trying to share an experience with you in hopes that it will make your journey smoother than it would have been if you didn't spend an hour with us today.

5 #Cloudscape2016 What We ARE Doing We ARE going to explore some things that often get overlooked throughout the early conceptual stages of cloud adoption. These things, if overlooked, can cost you money, time, or god forbid, downtime. We ARE going to talk about the complexities of connectivity and security. And finally, we'll review the awesomeness that is hybrid cloud computing and some of the cool things we're doing with it today!

6 #Cloudscape2016 Solution Overview Hybrid Cloud Computing

7 #Cloudscape2016 Hybrid Cloud Computing Overview of what hybrid cloud computing is and what's entailed in actually achieving a truly operational model Spotlight on components that are critical in order to leverage the technology but are hard to achieve Blah, Blah, Blah!!!! Didn’t we just promise we wouldn’t do this?? Ya, we did… On to the good stuff!

8 #Cloudscape2016 The Pitch Initial pre-sales meeting with cloud services provider

9 #Cloudscape2016 Cloud Solution Overview Meeting Agenda Step 1: Understanding Cloud Architecture Step 2: Move your stuff to the cloud Step 3: Enjoy cloud computing Meeting Attendees: Marty McCloud Director of Infrastructure A company that wants to use the cloud Sr. Cloud Architect Some big cloud services provider Paul Ezhaya

10 #Cloudscape2016 Cloud Migration Overview Step 1: Application Mapping Ooops…

11 #Cloudscape2016 Cloud Solution Overview Meeting Step 2: Data Migration

12 #Cloudscape2016 Cloud Solution Overview Meeting Step 3: Cloud Computing Success!!

13 #Cloudscape2016 Did That Look Familiar?

14 #Cloudscape2016 Meanwhile Back On Earth… Internal Cloud Strategy Meeting

15 #Cloudscape2016 Internal Cloud Strategy Meeting Agenda Discuss our cloud strategy for 2016/17 Meeting Attendees: Negative Ned Director of Infrastructure A company that wants to use the cloud Sr. Network and Infrastructure Architect A company that wants to use the cloud Paul Ezhaya

16 #Cloudscape2016 H ey Guys, guess what? We're going to the cloud and I think I just met with the company who will make it happen for us!

17 #Cloudscape2016 They said… “It's way less expensive” “It's easy to integrate into our existing WAN/LAN” “Most of our apps should already be ‘cloud ready’” “All of your existing vendors have very clearly defined cloud integration strategies and their support teams are completely up to speed on their hybrid-cloud operating models” “ISPs are super good at connecting you to the cloud and their pricing is very competitive and easy to understand” “We can just spin-up whatever we want whenever we want it and it will just work!!” “It's super easy” Internal Cloud Strategy Meeting

18 #Cloudscape2016 Internal Cloud Strategy Meeting – Notes Meeting Notes: Get that cloud guy on the phone to answer Ned's questions Figure out what's really required to move our applications to the cloud Understand what's complicated about the connectivity Make sure our vendors are all ok with seamless cloud integration To-do’s:

19 #Cloudscape2016 Fast- Forward Cloud Strategy v2.0 was Born Turns out Ned had some good points… We made a new To-Do list…

20 #Cloudscape2016 The To-Do List – Evolved Understand the difference between public and private cloud services Understand the difference between IaaS and colocation Define exactly how we want to leverage the cloud and for what Assemble a team which represents each area of our technology stack along with someone who's done this before. At least some of it! Collectively create a business case, solution overview, high-level design and list of requirements that support your cloud initiative Leverage your partner network to meet with vendors and solution providers that provide the services you need to meet your list of requirements and high-level design

21 #Cloudscape2016 Lessons Learned Don't let a product or solution dictate your architecture. It should ALWAYS be the other way around. Learn as much as you can about HOW things do what they do. It's much more important than WHAT they do. There is always, ALWAYS a devil in the details somewhere. If you haven't found it, keep looking or get someone else to look. Don't make decisions without socializing them thoroughly with the people they might impact Don't make assumptions when it comes to interoperability or dependencies of systems Leverage your partner network to meet with vendors and solution providers that provide the services you need to meet your list of requirements and high-level design

22 #Cloudscape2016 What Happened Next?

23 #Cloudscape2016 First Things First We met with our technology partner, GreenPages and reviewed what we wanted to do. They helped bring together the technical and operational resources we needed to complete our cloud strategy team.

24 #Cloudscape2016 The Fun Part! We met with a lot of ISPs, hardware vendors, software vendors, service providers, hosting providers, etc. (Not all new ones, we met with our existing vendors first!)

25 #Cloudscape2016 Then, we did it. After careful planning, we pulled it all together and made it happen. Want to take a look?

26 #Cloudscape2016 Functional Architecture Overview

27 #Cloudscape2016 Steps for Success The need for a partner The need for a plan The need for workshops and collaborative discussions The need for PoCs Start small Plan for scale Don't let people try it before you're ready for them to use it. Why? Because it's awesome, they'll get hooked and you'll be getting your first support ticket before you even knew it wasn't in dev anymore.

28 #Cloudscape2016 Next Steps Set up a meeting to discuss your hybrid cloud initiatives. Let the in-room facilitator know and we will arrange it for you.

29 #Cloudscape2016 Thank You Nick Phelps, Moonrock Consulting nphelps@moonrockconsulting.com Paul Ezhaya, FreedomPay paul.ezhaya@freedompay.com
