5  A huge problem for Suntrust Park is keeping all of the fans safe while in the park.  To ensure the safety of visitors to the Braves SunTrust Park, one task for security personnel is to to identify unknown substances to determine what they are.  You are in a training program to become one of the security personnel at the new stadium, and you will be learning how to identify unknown substances.  In order to become certified, and get a job at the new park, you must identify unknown substances and document how you made the identification based on their physical and chemical properties. Problem

The metal is one of the following: 1.Copper 2.Aluminum 3.Brass The clear liquid is one of the following: 1.Water 2.Isopropyl alcohol 3.Salt water 4.Hydrogen Peroxide The white powder is one of the following: 1.Baking soda 2.Baking powder 3.Baby powder 4.Cornstarch

16 Density demo  Write on an even numbered page in your notebook.  Write a CLAIM what you think will happen when I pour the four different liquids into a beaker.  Write about the Evidence you see.  And write REASONING of what you saw happen.

21 Closing  Students you will write three questions on an index card or sheet of paper and have your parent(s)/guardian record the answers on the back of the card and sign it. If the parent cannot answer the questions, then it is the student’s responsibility to teach them.

23 Mystery powder  Repeat steps 7-8 in your lab handout while only using the powder that was provided.  The goal is to be able to identify the powder. Be sure to record all observations and what the mystery powder is.

She filled a graduated cylinder with water and it read 30mL. After dropping the object in the cylinder the water level went up to 40mL. What is the density of the object?  Explain what is volume?

29 Ticket out the door  Write down how to find the volume of a regular shaped object such as a cube.  Write down how to find the volume of irregular shaped object.

30 Warm up 8/17  Using the displacement method of finding volume Kevin Durant had an irregular object that had a mass of 100g. She filled a graduated cylinder with water and it read 50mL. After dropping the object in the cylinder the water level went up to 100mL. What is the density of the object?

31 Lab procedure today  Even number tables will start with the metals and odd number tables will start with the liquids.  Material managers come up here and get the necessary items and any kind of not following instructions will result in dismissal from the lab.  Test to see if the metals are magnetic and as well pipet exactly 30 mL or water into the graduated cylinder.  Come up to the front and calculate the mass of all 3 of your metals.

32 Metal Lab  Your group will receive 3 metals.  1. Identify all the physical properties differences and similarities.  2. Test to see if the metals are magnetic. State weather that is a physical property or a chemical property.

33 Metal Lab  3. Managers get a graduated cylinder and put 30 mL of water in the cylinder. Drop a metal in the cylinder and measure the displacement to find out the volume of the metal.  4. Collectors in seat C bring each metal up and measure the mass of each and record. Be sure to bring your science notebook up with you. Go back to your groups and figure out the density. 

The red has a density of 0.91g/cm³. What is the order of the liquids in cylinder? Explain your answer. What will happen if you slip a small, flat, chip of wood (density 0.85g/cm³) into the cylinder?
