Ideal Gas Law CONTINUATION OF THE GAS LAWS
2
What is an ideal gas? An ideal gas is a gas that behaves and follows the Kinetic Molecular Theory without being affected by real world conditions. Real world conditions: Intermolecular forces within gas molecules Particles contain atomic volume Why have an ideal gas? An easy theoretical gas scenario to describe the relation of a gas to its environment.
3
Ideal Gas Equation Select the R constant that has units that are consistent with the units in the question. PV = nRT Relates all three gas law variables: V, T, and P But also includes R – gas constant and n for # of moles.
4
Ex. 5.0 g of neon is at 256 mm Hg and at a temperature of 35º C. What is the volume? P = 256 mm of Hg T = 35 + 273 = 308K V = ? n = 5.0g Moles R = select the correct R But we must convert mm of Hg to Atm. See work on board
5
Ex 2. What is a gas’s temperature in Celsius when it has a volume of 25L, 203 mol, 143.5 atm? P = 143.5atm T = ? V = 25L n = 203mol R = select the correct R See work on board

Ex 3. Find the volume, in mL, when 7.00 g of O 2 and 1.50 g of Cl 2 are mixed in a container with a pressure of 482 atm and at a temperature of 22º C. P = 482atm T = 22 + 273 = 295K V = ? n = total moles R = select the correct R See work on board
