–Dachau was the first concentration camp in Germany. It remains unchanged as a symbol of inhumanity. It was in existence for 12 years. March 20, 1933 was when it was established. “ The camp was divided into two sections: the camp area and the crematorium. The camp area consisted of 32 barracks, including one for clergy imprisoned for opposing the Nazi regime and one reserved for medical experiments. The courtyard between the prison and the central kitchen was used for the summary execution of prisoners. An electrified barbed-wire gate, a ditch, and a wall with seven guard towers surrounded the camp.”[1]

The prisoners were ruled more and more strongly by their desperate need for food. It was left to the discretion of each SS-man to determine the alleged offences of the prisoners. Anything from a button missing from a jacket, a spot on the barrack floor, a short pause to catch one’s breath while working may be cause for punishment. Some common punishments included the following : Flogging: Prisoner was strapped to a specially designed block and had to count aloud the lashes he received with a whip. Tree or Pole-Hanging: Prisoner was suspended for hours with his hands tied behind his back. The Standing Punishment: Prisoner had to stand w/o moving for days in roll-call square in all weather. The Cutting Off of Rations: Food cut back for individual or entire group. Detention: Prisoners held in camp prison, in chains and deprived of their rations. Death Penalty: Specified in the Order of Discipline and Punishment

* During the war, medical experiments were performed on helpless prisoners in the concentration camps. * It was called SS Science; where SS physicians used prisoners as human guinea pigs. *These doctors injected 1100 prisoners with malaria. *This usually weakened the prisoners so much that if they did not die from the disease, they died from other illness due to their weakened state.
