Although dry spells are unavoidable in the region, occurring roughly every 25 years, it was the combination of drought and misuse of the land that led to the incredible devastation of the Dust Bowl years.” LAFS.6.RI.2.5 Sample Response: These sentences move the text from describing the drought in the 1930s in to describing the other issues that caused the Dust Bowl. 13 Orange County Public Schools According to the passage, “The Drought,” from PBS-The American Experience and a letter from The Atlantic Magazine, the dust bowl developed due to severe weather and poor farming practices, leading to environmental and psychological effects on people. The dust bowl affected the people that lived there in various ways including having a negative effect on their mentality and the environment. Droughts, dust storms, and the farming practices that were used in the early 1920s and 1930s played a role in the development of the dust bowl.  It was extremely hard to see because of the constant dust clouds. (“The Drought” – paragraph 5, the letter to Evelyn- paragraph 1)  The land was stripped by cattle overgrazing and sheep herds according to the article, “The Drought.” (paragraph 4)  The land was plowed by settlers who used their farming techniques. (“The Drought” paragraph 4) According to the letter to Evelyn, there were psychological effects of the dust bowl which included, “the confusion of mind resulting from the overthrow of all plans for improvement or normal farm work, and the difficulty of making other plans even in a tentative way.” (paragraph 1) The constant dust ruined their homes as evidenced in the letter to Evelyn. (paragraph 1) With the development of the dust bowl, there were significant effects on people that lived in the Great Plains.
