Alternative Energy Geothermal & Wind energy
2
Geothermal Energy
3
Geothermal energy is a natural source of heat that is Generated and Stored in the Earth. The geothermal energy of the Earth's crust originates from, ●the original formation of the planet (20%) ●radioactive decay of materials (80%). WATCH ME!! Hold the phone...What's Geothermal energy?
4
How can we get geothermal energy? We (not necessarily us, but people who do that kinda thing) can get geothermal energy from things like molten lava! We can also get energy from Hot rocks. Not the kind you find at a spa, but the rocks you find when you dig deep under the surface….. like really deep. We can also get heat by capturing the hot water from underground springs!
5
Even though I think geothermal energy is pro, there are a few cons you should be aware of. ●Does Not put other things in the air. ●Zero carbon ●The process can scrub out sulfur that might have been released. ●No mining or transportation required- saves money. ●Could be built underground ●New technologies show promise to utilize lower temperatures The pros and Cons
6
Cons ●Often far away from population/where we need it. ●Uses water. Even though we are saving electricity we are using water. ●Sulfur dioxide and silica are dispersed into the air ●High construction costs. ●Its hard to drill through hard rock. ●Care must be taken to manage heat and not overuse it. The pros and cons… continued.
7
Cool… But what do we use it for? We can use geothermal energy for many things. Things that might even affect you in your daily life, or should… ………. Showering Drinking Cooking Hot tubs etc.
8
Lower pollution, produce no combustion or smoke, It will save us money being that it is renewable and we wont have to keep making it, and that it is a natural resource. What’s the long term outcome?
9
Wind Energ y
10
Wind power or wind energy is the energy extracted from wind to give us power and electricity. Watch me!! What is wind energy? FUN FACT Iowa ranks 2nd in the nation for wind energy production as there are almost 2,900 utility scale wind turbines in Iowa. This creates enough electricity to power 1,000,000 homes.almost 2,900 utility scale
11
We can get wind energy by using wind turbines to produce electrical power, windmills for mechanical power, wind pumps = water pumping, and using sails to propel ships. These are all natural ways of getting energy, for a low cost. So we can get energy from the wind...how?
12
Pros -does not cause pollution -renewable/ can't run out of it. -low cost - protects homeowners from power outages. Cons -threat to animals/birds -noise -unpredictable (not always gonna be windy) The pros and cons
13
We can use wind energy to power many things even our homes. We can use them to power almost anything. However you can't rely on wind energy being that its not always windy. But, what kind of things can we power with it?
14
Using wind energy can save you money by creating your own energy, with wind. Not only can it save you money but you will also be creating clean energy, producing NO pollution. What is the long term outcome?
15
I think both of these alternative energy sources are efficient, affordable, and reliable in many ways. I know that by using these two energy types we can have a much more viable future. Less pollution, saving money, and using resources that are natural to use and renewable instead of artificial energy that creates pollution. My opinion on geothermal energy and wind energy?
