Chapter 4: Cells and Energy 2.4 Identify the reactants, products, and basic purposes of photosynthesis and cellular respiration. Explain the interrelated nature of photosynthesis and cellular respiration in the cells of photosynthetic organisms. 2.5 Explain the important role that ATP serves in metabolism.

We will study: 4.1 Chemical Energy and ATP 4.2 Overview of Photosynthesis 4.4 Overview of Cellular Respiration 4.6 Fermentation (optional sections 4.3 and 4.5 provide additional details about photosynthesis and cellular respiration)

*two page notebook format* Do Now: 1) What cellular activities require energy? 2) Review academic vocabulary: student book page 52. Friday, October 2, 2015 Topic: Chemical Energy and ATP Objectives: Describe the importance of ATP as an energy-carrying molecule. Identify energy sources used by organisms. Agenda Homework check 3.5 Investigation Notes & problems 4.1 Page 30Page 31

Investigation  Ms. Holland will give you a small object. Figure out how to make it do something.  This toy is like the ATP your cells use for energy. Read page 53 and figure out HOW this toy is like ATP. Describe in writing how a popper is like ATP.

Use partner reading to read and answer “Instant Replay” questions on Pages 54-55  Partner reading protocol:  Partner 1 and 2 look together at the same text.  Partner 1 reads a paragraph, and partner 2 listens.  After partner 1 reads, partner 2 either:  Summarizes aloud what was read, or  Asks a question about what was read.  If a question was asked, both partners discuss the reading until both understand.  Partners switch roles for reading the next paragraph.  Continue taking turns reading and summarizing until you complete the passage.

Classwork/Homework  Complete questions 4.1 #1-5 on page 55  Take your popper home and teach someone else how it works and how it is like ATP/ADP. Bring in the signature of whoever you teach for 10 extra credit points.
