Aim: How do we evaluate algebraic expressions? Do Now: Evaluate. 1. (-4) 2 ÷ [(6+2) 2 - 15. 4] 2. 7 + (6 × 5 2 + 3) 3. (-2 3 - 8 * 5) ÷ 12 √100

Aim: How do we evaluate algebraic expressions? Numerical Expressions are expressions that are composed (made up) of only numbers & operations. Algebraic Expressions are expressions that are made up of variables, numbers & operations. Two options: 1. Simplify (combine like terms, distribute or reduce) *Answer is another expression 2. Evaluate (if you are given the value of the variable) *Answer is a number

Aim: How do we evaluate algebraic expressions? Ex. 1 - Evaluate 2t 2 - 3t + 6 when t = 2. Step 1 --> Substitute in the value. 2(2) 2 - 3(2) + 6 Step 2 --> Evaluate the expression. = 2(4) - 3(2) + 6 = 8 - 6 + 6 = 8

Aim: How do we evaluate algebraic expressions? Evaluate x 4 + 3x 3 – x 2 + 6 for x = –3. (–3) 4 + 3(–3) 3 – (–3) 2 + 6 = 81 + 3(–27) – (9) + 6 = 81 – 81 – 9 + 6 = –3 Evaluate 3x 2 – 12x + 4 for x = –2.

Aim: How do we evaluate algebraic expressions?

Homework: A.N.6 Evaluating Algebraic Expressions Worksheet Exit Question: Evaluate a 3 b 2 c + 2a 2 b 2 c 2 - 3ab 2 c 3 when a = -2, b = 2, c = 3
