3
Main Idea/Vocabulary I will choose the best strategy to solve a problem.
4
Example 1 STEPHANIE: I had a lemonade stand. I sold large cups of lemonade for $0.65 and small cups of lemonade for $0.40. After one hour, I earned $6.15. How many of each size did I sell? YOUR MISSION: Find the number of each size sold.
5
Example 1 Understand What facts do you know? You know that Stephanie earned $6.15. She sold large cups for $0.65. She sold small cups for $0.40. What do you need to find? You need to know how many of each size Stephanie sold.
6
Example 1 Plan You need to think about the different combinations of large and small cups she could have sold. So, the guess and check strategy is a good choice.
7
Example 1 Solve Use a calculator. Since 10 × $0.65 = $6.50, less than 10 large cups were sold. Let’s try 8. Too much. Too little. 1 st guess 2 nd guess 3 rd guess 8 6 7 $5.20 $3.90 $4.55 3 5 4 $1.20 $2.00 $1.60 $6.40 $5.90 $6.15 Answer: So, Stephanie sold 7 large cups and 4 small cups of lemonade.
8
Example 1 Check Look back at the problem. Since 7 × $0.65 = $4.55 and 4 × $0.40 = $1.60, Stephanie made $4.55 + $1.60 or $6.15. So, the answer is correct.
