Warm up Use the distributive property to rewrite the expression. 7(4a – 8) -9(5x – 9y)

1.2 Evaluate and Simplify Algebraic Expressions Algebra II

Objective Evaluate and simplify expressions involving real numbers.

Vocabulary Numerical expression – consists of numbers, operations, and grouping symbols. Power – an expression formed by repeated multiplication of the same factor. Exponent – represents the number of times the base is used as a factor. Variable – letter that is used to represent one or more numbers.

Vocabulary Continued Algebraic expression – an expression involving variables. Terms – the parts added together in an expression. A term that has a variable is called a variable term. A term with no variable is called a constant. Like terms – have the same variable part. Identity – a statement that equates two equivalent expressions.

Example 1 – Evaluate Powers Evaluate. A. -13² B. (-13)²

Example 2 – Evaluate an algebraic expression Evaluate: 3m² + 5m – 12 when m = -4

Example 3 You are selling fresh – squeezed lemonade at a county fair for $2.50 per glass. You spend $180 to rent the stand and buy the ingredients and supplies you need. Write an expression that shows your profit from selling g glasses of lemonade. Find your profit if you sell 268 glasses of lemonade.

Example 4 – Simplify by combining like terms A. 12n – 7n B. 8r³ + 6r² - 9r³ C. 9(t – 4) – 6(t + 7) D. 15a – 8b – 20a + 14b

Assignment Pg. 13 – 15 (4 – 22 even, 26 – 32 even, 44 – 54 even)
