Objective: You will be able to properly use a microscope, explain cell theory and how Hooke and Leeuwenhoek contributed to this knowledge. Microscopes and cell theory 7.1

How Hooke contributed: Robert Hooke used an early compound microscope to look at plant material and coined the term “cells” in 1665 Cells reminded him of his tiny room at the monastery- also called a cell

How Leeuwenhoek contributed: Leeuwenhoek was the first to see many things under a microscope (organisms in pond water)

Cell Theory-  1- all living things are composed of cells  2- cells are basic unit of structure and function in living things  3- new cells are produced by existing ones

Microscopes  Better microscopes = scientists make more discoveries  Electron microscopes can see 1000 xs smaller than regular microscopes

Microscopes Using microscopes we have been able to tell the difference between two types of cells: 1. Prokaryotes 2. Eukaryotes

Cells Prokaryotes- no nucleus, generally smaller and simpler than eukaryotes. Ex: bacteria Eukaryotes- nucleus, where genetic info is stored. More complex and varied. Ex: plants, animals, fungi and protists. YOU!
