Masterpiece Moments Wednesday, February 20th Paul Klee Senecio (Head of Man) 1922

Who is Paul Klee? Paul Klee was born in Switzerland in 1879. This is about the same time as the invention of the automobile. His parents were musicians. As a boy, he played the violin. He also loved art. His grandmother taught him how to draw and paint. When he grew older, he had to choose between music and art. He chose to be an artist. He married a concert pianist. Paul would become a stay at home dad and work on his art.

Paul Klee’s Art His art was very colorful and fun. He really liked art that was done by children, and his art is often described as childlike. Paul Klee’s art is known as abstract or contemporary due to his use of the revolutionary style of cubism. Many of his greatest paintings are just colors and shapes. He loved color and most of his paintings are filled with beautiful and exciting colors. He also liked to paint more than one painting at a time. He could have up to 12 paintings in his studio, all halfway done. By the end of his career, Klee painted over 8,000 paintings

Paul Klee’s Style – Expressionism What is Expressionism? To make something that is real look different through color and texture. Artists are more concerned with having their art express a feeling than making the art look realistic. Head of Man is also Geometric – using simple geometric forms such as circles and squares in design. What is a Collage? A collage is a work of art made from putting together found objects and creating a new piece of art. A collage may sometimes include: newspaper clippings, ribbons, bits of colored or hand-made paper, portions of other artwork or text, photographs and other found objects, glued to a piece of paper or canvas. The term “collage” comes from the French "coller" meaning “glue”.

Senecio – Head of Man 1922 What do you see in the painting? What shapes did the artist use to make the face? Are any of the shapes repeated? What is missing from the man’s head and face? Where do you think his mouth is? Where else do you see two squares corners are touching together? How many different colors do you see? Are they mostly dark or light colors? Do you know what Senecio means?

Your Project – The Head of…YOU! Draw a circle or oval – whatever you think is the best example of the shape of your face. – You can also cut out a shape for your face from construction paper and paste it on the paper. Use the scraps of construction paper to create a collage of your face using simple geometric forms such as circles, triangles and squares. Remember, no two faces are the same, so use as many different shapes as you want. Be creative and have fun!
