Principles Promotion offers recognition and reward for demonstrated and sustained excellence in the three elements of – teaching, research and community engagement Promotion will be based on merit The University values an interdisciplinary approach at all levels and in each of the three elements – teaching, research and community engagement. The University is committed to the principles of equality of opportunity, fairness and social inclusion The applicant’s achievements will be considered relative to opportunity 3 of 18

Promotions Cycle Provides regular opportunities to reward and recognise staff for their contributions Promotion can be applied for in each of the three rounds Significantly reduced notification period from previous cycles Promotions effective one month after notification date Increased application support in the form of templates 4 of 18

Promotion Expectations Applicants for promotion will be expected to: Demonstrate how they meet the criteria of the level to which they seek promotion Demonstrate their all-round performance clearly exceeds the expectations and criteria of their current level Demonstrate they have maintained an active and effective scholarship by contributions to the three elements Note: Weighting of each element will take account of the applicant’s workload and nature of appointment. 6 of 18

Promotion Expectations Cont’d As academic staff progress through promotion levels there is an expectation that: they will demonstrate how teaching, research and community engagement have contributed to one another they will be able to demonstrate an increase in the quality, impact and effectiveness of their teaching, research and community engagement, as appropriate to their discipline their contribution to their discipline will be increasingly influential they will demonstrate increasing quality and impact in their leadership and mentoring 7 of 18

Overview of Eligibility All applicants must: have completed the preceding year’s Performance Development & Review (PDR) e.g to apply in 2010 staff must have completed their 2009 PDR. served 12 months with the University in an academic position by the application due date (previous service does count) 8 of 18

Overview of Application Applying for Promotion A promotion application comprises: Cover sheet & checklist (new template) Part 1. Case for promotion (no template - developed by applicant) Part 2. Details – CV template (new template) Part 3. Sources of Evidence (no template - developed by applicant) Discipline Report (new template) Referee Reports (new template) 9 of 18

Overview of Application Coversheet & Checklist: A tool to guide applicants - checklist to ensure you address all policy/submission requirements New template which partly replaces the 2009 ‘guidelines document’ Covers personal details, eligibility, submission requirements, checklist for each part of the application and applicant’s statements 10 of 18

Overview of Application Part 1: Case for Promotion Build a case for promotion & frame it around 3 elements of academic endeavour - teaching, research & community engagement An applicant is to indicate the relative contribution of each element in their application (quality & impact of contribution) Applicants for Level B and C: must put forward a case that demonstrates achievement in all three elements of academic endeavour whilst emphasising excellence in at least one Applicants for Level D: must put forward a case that demonstrates achievement in all three elements of academic endeavour whilst emphasising excellence in at least two Applicants for Level E – must put forward a case that demonstrates how they have achieved excellence in all three elements of academic endeavour (relative to appointment) 11 of 18

Overview of Application Discipline Report Template Prepared for each application by Head of Department Describes discipline specific expectations and how applicant is tracking against these Template offers direction for HOD Applicant responds to Discipline Report if appropriate and includes comments as part of application Recommended timeline provided 14 of 18

Overview of Application Referee Report Template Demonstrates applicant’s professional standing and reputation in discipline Requirements around number of referees and their national/international standing Applicants are responsible for following up referees Referee’s send reports directly to central HR (Lisa Jessup) 15 of 18

Overview of Promotions Process Committee meetings Briefing from equity observer Instrument of Evaluation is provided Review and consider all applications against stated criteria and policy Determine which applicants to interview and conduct Determine outcomes (promote, do not promote, accelerated progression within applicant’s current level) 16 of 18

Overview of Promotions Process VC report to be written and forwarded to central HR VC endorses report Applicants are notified of outcome 4 months after submission date Feedback available to unsuccessful applicants from the promotion committee chair Promotion effective 1 month after notification 17 of 18
