SCIENCE 8 TOPIC 2
4
THE DEFINITION TO DENSITY Density is the amount of matter found in a substance in a certain predetermined volume.
5
WHAT WE LEARN FROM THE DOMINO DENSITY ACTIVITY…
6
The density of any pure substance, no matter how many different sizes it may be broken up into, is always the same for that substance at the same given temperature and pressure.
7
HOW CAN A SUBSTANCE’S DENSITY BE CHANGED?
8
The first way is to change the temperature. Increase the temperature – decrease the density. Decrease the temperature – increase the density.
9
The second way is to change the pressure. Increasing the pressure – increases the density. Decreasing the pressure – decreases the density.
10
DENSITY VERSUS PRESSURE
11
CAN YOU NAME THE PHASE THAT SUBSTANCES ARE MOST DENSE AND LEAST DENSE?
12
Most substances are most dense in the solid state and least dense in the gas state.
13
WHAT ARE WATER’S TWO UNIQUE FEATURES?
14
Water is the only substance to naturally exist in all three states at the same time on earth Why is this important ?
15
This way animals can use it no matter what the season.
16
Water reaches its highest density while in the liquid state at 4 o celsius. Why is this important?
17
This way water in ice form, being less dense than water in solid form, floats. Because of this, the ice can form an insulating layer on the surface of a lake protecting water organisms from the cold so they may keep alive.
18
WHICH TYPE OF AIR HOLDS MORE VATER VAPOR? HOT OR COLD?
19
Higher temperature air can hold more water vapor because the air is less dense. Because the air is less dense, there are more open spaces in a given volume of air for the water vapor molecules to fit into.
20
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HUMIDITY AND RELATIVE HUMIDITY? Extra Question
21
Relative humidity (written as a percent) is the measurement of how much water vapor actually is in the air compared to the amount that could be in the air at that temperature.
22
Humidity is just the measurement of how much water there is in the air regardless of what the temperature is.
23
WHAT IS DEW POINT?
24
Dew point (a.k.a. saturation point) is the temperature at which water vapor in the air condenses into water in the liquid form. The air cools to the point where the air can’t hold any more water vapor.
25
A sling psychrometer is used to measure the dew point.
