INTEGERS

Absolute Value Numbers and the Number Line Addition Subtraction Multiplication and Division Add/Subtract Matrices

Numbers and the Number Line Natural Numbers are the counting numbers starting with 1. Whole Numbers begin with 0 and contain all the Natural Numbers 12345678910 0123456789

Rational Numbers are numbers that can be written as a fraction. It includes terminating decimals and repeating decimals. Numbers and the Number Line 9876543 2 1 0-9-8-7-6 -5-4-3-2 Integers are the whole numbers and their opposites. Negatives Positives Examples.75.56.31 Opposite numbers are numbers that are the same distance from 0 in opposite directions.

Numbers and the Number Line Irrational Numbers are numbers that can not be written as a fraction. They are decimals that are nonrepeating and nonterminating Examples  0.1567613491… Real Numbers is the set of all rational and irrational numbers. Real Numbers Rational NumbersIrrational Numbers Integers Whole Numbers 0 15 -13 -7 -35 -.37.823 -.37 29 2 5  6

Absolute Value The distance a number is from zero on a number line. A distance is always a positive number. Symbol 18 is 18 units from 0 0 is 0 units from 0 -4 is 4 units from 0

Addition SAME SIGNS Give the answer the same sign and add the numbers together. -6 + -8 = - 14 7 + 5 =12

DIFFERENT SIGNS Addition 1.Give the answer the sign from the larger of the two numerical parts. 2.Subtract the absolute value of the numbers. 7 + -5 =2-9 + 21= 6 + -15 = 12 - 2 nd step 21 – 92 nd step 7-5 2 nd step 15 - 6 9 - 23 + 16 = - 2 nd step 23 - 16 7

Subtraction Change the problem into an addition problem. To subtract an integer, add its opposite. -17 - 9 -17+-9 = -26 2 - 7 2+-7 = - Think 7-2 5 7 – (-4 ) 7+4 = 11

Add/Subtract Matrices Add or subtract the numbers that are in corresponding places. = =

Multiplication and Division The answer is always POSITIVE. SAME SIGNS -7 (- 9) Multiply or Divide the numbers. = 63 6 8 = 48 = 7 = 9

Multiplication and Division The answer is always NEGATIVE. DIFFERENT SIGNS -11 13 Multiply or Divide the numbers. 143 9(-6) 54 = -= - = -= - = -= - 8 = -= - 6
