10 Purpose of Staff Senate  To advise and assist the Chancellor of the University in the solution of issues and the formulation of policies.  To advise and assist the Director of Human Resources in developing and initiating more effective personnel policies, procedures, and programs.  To participate in the University governance system.  To encourage all Civil Service and Administrative Staff employees to consult with members of the Staff Senate concerning issues, policies, and possible recommendations for appropriate Staff Senate action.

11 Who is on the Senate?  16 Voting Members  4 Administrative Staff members  1 non-represented  3 represented  7 Members from Negotiated & Prevailing Civil Service  3 Members from Open Range Civil Service  1 Member from the Alton Campus  1 Member from the East St. Louis Campus  Non-Voting Members  President  Past President  President-Elect

12 Who is on the Senate?  Treasurer  Elected from the membership of the Senate  Can be a voting member  Secretary  Elected from the membership of the Senate  Can be a voting member

13 What Are the Panels?  Each constituency group has a panel  Negotiated & Prevailing  Open Range  Professional Staff  Each panel has a chair and six additional members  The panel chair must be a Staff Senator  The panels are responsible for discussing issues that pertain to the that classification  The panel chair is responsible for reporting to the Staff Senate on the issues and recommendations of its group for review and appropriate action by the Staff Senate.

14 What are ex-officio members  Ex-officio members are individuals who often report to the Staff Senate on various issues.  Ex-officio members attend Staff Senate meetings but are not voting members  Ex-officio members are:  Vice Chancellor for Administration Designee (currently HR Director)  SURS Representative (HR Staff member)  SUCSAC (Elected, currently Mike Pulley)  University Planning & Budget Council—2 Staff Senate Appointments

15 When does Staff Senate meet?  Staff Senate meets the first Thursday of every month at 9am. Meetings for FY16 are scheduled as follows:  Members are expected to attend all meetings. If you cannot attend a meeting, submit your reason to the President & Governance Secretary prior to the meeting whenever possible. Aug. 6Sept. 3Oct. 1 Nov. 5 (East St. Louis)Dec. 3Jan. 7 Feb. 4Mar. 3Apr. 7 (Alton) May 5June 2

16 When does the Executive Committee meet?  Staff Senate Executive Committee meets the third Thursday of every month at 9am.

17 What are the expectations of Senators?  Attend all Staff Senate meetings  Represent the Staff Senate within the campus community  Bring forward issues of concern from SIUE employees (can be to the panel or the full Senate if it impacts all employees)  Assist with various events and fundraisers throughout the year  Provide input on campus issues, policies, etc.  Serve as a point of contact for staff members campus- wide

18 What is my role on the Senate—Panel Members?  Expectations  Attend monthly (or as needed) meetings of the Panel  Bring issues of concern from your constituency to the Panel for review and discussion  Provide comment on policies and procedures brought to the Senate  Through the Panel Chair, bring forward action items to the full Senate
