2
Do Now 9/1 List all the food and drink you have consumed today.
3
IWBAT Identify the different types of biomolecules and communicate the similarities and differences in their structure and function by talking in cooperative groups.
4
Classification of Compounds A.Organic- compounds containing CARBON (with hydrogen). Ex. Plants, animals B.Inorganic- compounds that do not contain carbon. Ex. Air, water, minerals
5
Carbon Review C atoms are versatile building blocks –bonding properties –4 stable covalent bonds HH C H H
6
Bonds B.Covalent bonds – form when two or more atoms share electrons. (very strong bonds -- “super glue”) C.Hydrogen bonds – a weak chemical attraction between polar molecules. Ex. A water molecule—H 2 O.
7
Complex molecules assembled like K’Nex
8
Hydrocarbons Combinations of C & H –non-polar not soluble in H 2 O hydrophobic –stable –very little attraction between molecules a gas at room temperature methane (simplest HC)
9
Hydrocarbons can grow
10
Macromolecules Smaller organic molecules join together to form larger molecules –macromolecules 4 major classes of macromolecules: –carbohydrates –lipids –proteins –nucleic acids

13
Carbohydrates A key source of energy Building blocks are simple sugars- monosaccharides (glucose & fructose) Disaccharides Polysaccharides
14
Lipids Stored energy (mostly in animal- some plant seeds) Nonpolar molecules Fats, oils, steroids, and waxes Phospholipids— make up the lipid bilayer of cell membranes
15
Proteins Important for structural functions –Skin, ligaments, tendons, muscles, hair Anitibodies, hemoglobin, hormones, enzymes Building blocks are amino acids –20 different amino acids are found in living things
16
Nucleic Acids Contain all genetic, hereditary information DNA, RNA Building blocks are nucleotides
17
Do Now 9/2 Quick Write: Think about what you ate for Breakfast (or lunch). What are the carbs, lipids, and protien sources? Write a paragraph about the biomolecules you have consumed today.
