Do Now When the bell rings In your seat: With pen/pencil With Notebook With Handout Silent and ready for Do Now After the bell (2 min) Answer the riddle: What is the longest word in the dictionary?
2
Agenda Do Now (5 min) Warm Up: (10 min) Notes: Hydrocarbons and Alcohols(30 min) Independent Practice (15 min) Exit Slip (5 min) Closeout (2 min) Do you get the joke now?
3
1.Identify each of the formulas to the right as Alkane Alkene Alkyne Alcohol 2.What type of formula is represented by each? Warm Up (10 min)
4
Objective: 1.Name and identify basic hydrocarbons and alcohols Unit: Organic Chemistry Topic: Hydrocarbons and Alcohols
5
Hydrocarbon: an organic compound composed of only hydrogen and carbon atoms. Saturated Hydrocarbon: a hydrocarbon without double or triple bonds. Saturated because maximum number of hydrogen atoms are bound to the carbon atoms Unsaturated Hydrocarbon: a hydrocarbon with one or more double or triple bonds between a pair of carbons Alcohol: an organic molecule that contains the hydroxyl group (OH) bonded to carbon. Vocabulary & Definitions
6
Because Carbon has 4 valence electrons it can create a wide variety of shapes and combinations Carbon compounds can be classified into functional groups Two important groups are Hydrocarbons Alcohols KP #1: Carbon
7
What they are: A compound where carbon bonds with hydrogen Can be classified as: KP #2: Hydrocarbons Saturated = Single bonds only Unsaturated = At least 1 double or triple bond OR
8
Naming Hydrocarbons Hydrocarbons are named based on the number of carbon atoms they contain (prefix) If they have single, double or triple bonds (suffix) Single = ane Double = ene Triple = yne Prefix + Suffix = Name KP #2: Hydrocarbons # of CarbonsPrefix 1Meth 2Eth 3Prop 4But 5Pent 6Hex
9
Name the following hydrocarbons: I do: We do: You do: KP #2: Hydrocarbons # of CarbonsPrefix 1Meth 2Eth 3Prop 4But 5Pent 6Hex
10
Writing formulas 3 Scenarios Hydrocarbons ending in “ANE” Hydrocarbons ending in “ENE” Hydrocarbons ending in “YNE” KP #2: Hydrocarbons # of CarbonsPrefix 1Meth 2Eth 3Prop 4But 5Pent 6Hex
11
Writing formulas You always know the # of Carbons (Prefix) Solve for hydrogen by: Ane = (C 2) + 2 Ene = C 2 Yne = C KP #2: Hydrocarbons # of CarbonsPrefix 1Meth 2Eth 3Prop 4But 5Pent 6Hex
12
Practice with “ANE” # Hydrogen = (C 2) + 2 I do: Propane We do: Pentane You do: Methane KP #2: Hydrocarbons # of CarbonsPrefix 1Meth 2Eth 3Prop 4But 5Pent 6Hex
13
Practice with “ENE” # Hydrogen = C 2 I do: Propene We do: Hexene You do: Methene KP #2: Hydrocarbons # of CarbonsPrefix 1Meth 2Eth 3Prop 4But 5Pent 6Hex
14
Practice with “YNE” # Hydrogen = C I do: Butyne We do: Ethyne You do: Propyne KP #2: Hydrocarbons # of CarbonsPrefix 1Meth 2Eth 3Prop 4But 5Pent 6Hex
15
What they are: A compound where carbon bonds with the hydroxyl (OH) group KP #3: Alcohols
16
Naming Hydrocarbons Alcohols are also named based on the number of carbon atoms they contain (prefix) Plus the suffix “ANOL” Prefix + Suffix = Name KP #3: Alcohols # of CarbonsPrefix 1Meth 2Eth 3Prop 4But 5Pent 6Hex
17
Naming Alcohols I do: CH 3 OH We do: You do: KP #3: Alcohols # of CarbonsPrefix 1Meth 2Eth 3Prop 4But 5Pent 6Hex
18
Independent Practice How C: 0 – 1, only on task conversation H: Raise hand, move on to next question until I am available A: Completing questions M: In clusters. 3 Hall passes. P: Answering questions on reverse side of notes, using notes, head up, asking questions of partners What 15 minutes Complete practice on reverse side of notes If you finish early, you should draw the hydrocarbons listed in question 1
19
1.Which of the following represents a saturated hydrocarbon? a.Ethene b.Ethyne c.Ethane d.Ethanol 2.What is the name of the following compound? 3.Write the molecular formula for Hexene. Exit Slip
