SEÁN MAC DIARMADA One of the seven signatories

ABOUT SEÁN Seán Mac Diarmada was born on the 27 th of January 1883 Kiltyclogher, County Leitrim. His birth home was a small thatched cottage, as you can imagine that is what most of the homes would of been like back then. Seán lived in Leitrim until 1908 when he moved Dublin. Here is a picture of Sean’s home in Leitrim.

IRA In May 1915, Seán was arrested in Tuam, County Galway, under the Defence of the Realm Act for giving a speech against enlisting into the British Army. After he was released in September 1915, he joined the secret Military Committee of the IRB, which was responsible for planning of the rising. Indeed Seán and Thomas were the people most responsible for it.

EASTER RISING Due to his disability, Seán took little part in the fighting of Easter week, but was stationed at the headquarters in the General Post Office, as one of the Provisional Republican Government. Following the surrender, he nearly escaped execution by blending in with the large body of prisoners. He was eventually recognised by Daniel Hoey of G Division. Following a court-martial on 9 May. Seán was executed by firing squad on 12 May at the age of 33.

In his hometown of Kiltyclogher a statue enscribed with his final written words (which he wrote before his execution) “I feel happiness the like of which I have never experienced. I die that the Irish nation might live!”

CONCLUSION I have learned a lot about Seán Mac Diarmada In the last while I was doing this project. It was a pleasure doing a project on Seán because he and all the other people that took part in the 1916 rising, gave up their lives for us to have our freedom!
