At this time of year, leaking roofs is a common and recurring problem here in Phoenix. When your roof leaks during a storm, the most you can aim to do on your own is simply to minimize any further damage to your house. Don't try to fix the roof yourself until after the severe weather has passed. Don't needlessly put your life or limbs at risk to the real dangers posed by strong winds and lightning strikes. Even after the storm has passed, it is always best to let a professional roofing contractor do the job. Emergency do-it- yourself repairs often tend to last only until the next storm comes along.

Protect your home from further interior damage while waiting for the storm to end by containing or controlling the drip or flow of rain water. If water is coming in from a specific spot in the ceiling, place a bucket directly under the leak. If water is coming in from several different places, position containers under as many of these spots as possible. Alternatively, cover the area where the leaks are dripping with some plastic sheeting or tarp. If you notice some discoloration on the ceiling or walls and it is starting to bulge or sag, it means that water is already gathering there. Break it open with a small hole and put a bucket underneath. Allowing the water to gather there until it bursts could lead to even more extensive and more expensive damage to your home.

Once the storm is over, you can apply some temporary emergency fixes on your roof to tide you over until professional help arrives. Firstly, remove the excess water from your roof and check the drains and scuppers to make sure that they are free of debris, open and functioning. Excessive ponding on the roof surface because of clogged drains and scuppers could cause your roof to collapse upon arrival of the next storm. Remember, here in Arizona we have storm after storm for the entire duration of the monsoon season.

After clearing your roof of debris and excess water, your next step is to locate the source of the leak or leaks where can apply some temporary patches. Depending on your roofing material, you can either apply trowel grade asphalt plastic cement, a sealant or roof tape membrane, even duct tape. Make sure the area is clean and dry before applying any of these patches. Alternatively, you can use plastic sheeting, tarp or plywood to temporarily cover the suspected holes or gaps on the surface of your roof and divert the direction of flow of water from the falling rain. But don't stay up there out in the out in the open too long during this season. Wait for the professional roofing contractor to arrive and offer you a lasting and permanent solution to your leaking roof problem. http://diversifiedroofing.com/
