Alcoholics Anonymous From its earliest days, A.A. has promised personal anonymity to all who attend its meetings. Because its founders and first members were recovering alcoholics themselves, they knew from their own experience how ashamed most alcoholics are about their drinking, how fearful they are of public exposure.

● Doesn't anonymity allow people to do bad things?

● Yes, but.... ● bad people can already do bad things because they are willing to break the law...

● Criminals and other bad people have the motivation to learn how to get good anonymity, and many have the motivation to pay well to achieve it. Being able to steal and reuse the identities of innocent victims (identify theft) makes it even easier. Normal people, on the other hand, don't have the time or money to spend figuring out how to get anonymity. ● This is the worst of all possible worlds.

Protections for anonymous speech are vital to democratic discourse. Whistle blowers, abuse survivors, law enforcement, journalists, and executives need anonymity. You need anonymity.
