Who Are We? Mission Statement: – The American Public Works Association exists to develop and support the people, agencies, and organizations that plan, build, maintain, and improve our communities. Working together, APWA and its membership contribute to a higher and sustainable quality of life. (APWA National) – 916 Members in the State of MN – 27,000 + Members Nationwide

Who Are We? Key Goals: Bring together the full spectrum of professionals and practitioners who serve the public through careers in public works. Help communities understand the critical role of public works in out lives. Define the knowledge, skills, and leadership required to meet our communities’ evolving public works needs. Provide a comprehensive approach to education, professional development, and continuous learning that prepares and qualifies those in public works to meet these needs.

So What Is Public Works? Public Works builds, operates, maintains, and rehabilitates systems and facilities which are essential to modern civilization and are predominately not otherwise provided by the private sector. Examples Include: Roadways, Bridges, Water & Sewer Systems, Stormwater Drainage & Treatment, Parks, Public Buildings, Dams, Schools, Beaches, and other Public Facilities.

Short Term Plan A series of three brown bag luncheons featuring practicing professionals covering several major fields in public works will be provided Session 1 (February 1): - Introduction (What is Public Works) (Mitch-Golden Valley, Justin-WSB, Nick-Hastings) - Structural Engineering in Public Works (James Archer-Hennepin County) Session 2 (March 1) - Traffic, Transportation and Pavement Engineering (April Crockett-MnDOT and Erin Laberee-Ramsey County) - Water Resources and Water/Wastewater Engineering (Jake Newhall-WSB and Joe Ward-WSB) Session 3 (April 12) - Environmental Engineering (Eric Lund-Barr Engineering) - Geotechnical Engineering (Ben Hoefer-American Engineering and Testing) - Life as an E.I.T. (Mike Waltman-Bolton & Menk)

Long Term Goals Set up a Student Group at U of M – To create and maintain a presence on campus and a connection with the workforce of tomorrow To provide – Job referrals, scholarships, mentorships, capstone project help, Internships, networking, full-time job placement, career development, and training We will need student help to run this group! – Think about the résumé benefit!
