1 BACKGROUND The challenges of moving to a next level of SH&E excellence are great, however there are many strengths and opportunities to counteract the threats and weaknesses that the Coal Mining Industry faces. In order to exploit these strengths, the South African Coal Mining Industry needs to continuously benchmark and achieve alignment on the industry specific SH&E objectives, and thereby clarify the What, Where, When Who and How. Most of the coal mining companies are addressing the “Sustainable Development” challenges in various ways. The greatest challenge however is “How is SH&E excellence achieved within Sustainable Development?” WHO SHOULD ATTEND This one day conference is designed for all people that need to get a better understanding of Sustainable Development:  Mine Management  SH&E Practitioners  Consultants  Service Providers  Relevant Labour Organisation Representatives  Equipment Manufacturers  Students  Governmental Departments TOPICS The conference’s program will address 3 main focus areas: What does Sustainable Development mean within the context of the Coal Mining Industry? 2 ROLE DELIVERABLES Pro-actively influencing the SH&E direction that the coal industry takes in terms of Occupational Hygiene, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Management, Safety; and Legislation and Regulations applicable to the mandated disciplines Participate in the development of legislation, guidelines and directives with regards to the mandated SH&E disciplines Actively work with Labour Organisation in order to enable success in the achievement of identified SH&E matters Facilitate an agreed coal industry view on identified SH&E matters for communication in respect of tripartism arrangements Integrate related SH&E technical expertise from the various SH&E technical associations (e.g. MVS, IAIA, SAIMM, etc), with the business requirements during decision making Advise and inform SACMA, SACHRA, SACAFMA on identified SH&E matters for communication to OHSPC, DME, DWAF, DEAT etc Ensure knowledge transfer of SH&E related matters within the coal mining industry On the above deliverables (legislation and management issues) Between Mining Houses, Best Practices of SH&E related matters and technologies Business implication of new technology Direct research on identified SH&E priorities within the coal mining industry, e.g. Coaltech 2020, SIMRAC, WRC MISSION To influence the Coal Mining Industries’ SH&E mandated decision making processes, through the active collaboration with legislative, technical, labour and business stakeholders “SH&E…back to basics…” 26 January 2011, Sasol Club, Secunda
