5. Homework – 8/11 As an introduction to our work about why people live where they do, you need to find out why you live here. Ask your parents why they settled in Marietta. If they were born here, go back further and find out why their parents came here. Write a few sentences to explain. Example: I came to Marietta because I wanted to leave the cold of Ohio and move far enough away to feel independent. I ended up in Cobb County because I could get a good job teaching here.

6. Warm up 8/12/14 With a partner discuss the terms absolute location and relative location. Hint: In Science when you studied the age of the earth you had the terms absolute age and relative age. When we discuss it, write down the definition of each term in your notebook on your Warm- Up page. Just write the date, each term and each definition.

7. What is Absolute Location? Definition of Absolute Location – Identifies a place’s exact location when using both latitude and longitude.

8. What is Relative Location? Definition of Relative Location – Gives a place’s estimated location.

9. Warm – up 8/13/14 Sit in your numbered groups. You will not need the folder until after the Warm-Up. Leave it on the desk and get out your notebook. Discuss with a partner the terms physical map and political map. Write the definitions of these terms on your warm up page after the date.

10. What are Physical Maps? Definition of Physical Maps – Maps that contain features such as rivers, mountains, deserts, lakes, etc.

11. What are Political Maps? Definition of Political Maps – Maps that contain features such as cities, states, borders, and capitals.

12. Group Instructions After your group has answered the questions on ONE page – everyone will contribute but I only need one page from your group – you will turn in this paper. Be sure each person’s name is on it. Get chart paper and write the topic at the top and then a sentence that tells why this factor affects population. Write this large enough to see it across the room.

15. What are Lines of Latitude? Definition of Lines of Latitude – Imaginary lines/circles that run east to west around a globe, but measure north or south of the equator; also called parallels.

16. What is the Prime Meridian? Definition of Prime Meridian – Imaginary line of longitude at 0 degrees that divides the earth into east and west hemispheres.

17. What is the Equator? Definition of Equator – Imaginary line of latitude at 0 degrees, located halfway between the north and south poles.

20. The Parts of a Map Compass Rose A compass rose is a model of a compass. It tells the cardinal directions, which are north, south, east, and west. Scale The scale on a map tells you the relative distance on the map to the real world. For example, a map’s scale may tell you that one inch on the map equals one mile in the real world.
